I often hear people say that psychology is the easiest major there is. Many people ask me if the reason I chose to major in psychology is because it is easy. Psychology is one of the most popular majors at the University of West Georgia and maybe it is easy for some, however, psychology is not easy for those who are not interested in it. These are the three main reasons that being a psychology major is not easy.
1. There is a lot of material.
Psychology is more difficult than people think. Being a psychology major can also lead into many different types of psychological study. A bachelor's degree in psychology has to combine the different types of careers available in the field. This means that we are covering material needed to be a counselor, researcher, psychiatrist, and many other jobs. Until you go into your master's degree, a psychology degree will be very broad.
2. If you don't enjoy it, it won't be easy.
Everything is more difficult if you are not truly interested in it. The same is true of psychology. If you are not truly interested in learning about how the mind works and relates to others, psychology can be truly difficult. Any class becomes easier when you are enjoying the work you do. It is easier to write a ten page paper on a topic you are interested in than it is to write a five page paper on something you don't care for.
3. You will write a lot.
Being a psychology major means being able to communicate effectively, especially through papers. It seems easy because you can usually write about anything as long as you can justify it, however, papers are generally long and research papers are the worst. The hardest thing about being a psychology major is that all papers must be in APA format. So much for all of that time we spent in school learning MLA.
Psychology is truly an interesting science and the reason that so many people major in psychology is not because it is easy. Psychology degrees allow you to go into a variety of fields after graduating and so it leaves you with options if you don't necessarily know what you want to do. As long as you want to work with people, psychology is a great major for the undecided.
