Three Preppy Designers Every Sorority Girl Needs In Her Life

Do you love anything seersucker? What about sailboats, starfish and all things nautical? Are you a “Lily girl" or a J. Crew aficionado? If you answered yes to any of these, or you're just a #basic sorority girl like me, it's time to update your wardrobe! These three brands are up and coming designers with clothing lines full of bright colors and ridiculous patterns, enough to make any sorority girl squeal and break into a recruitment cheer. So watch out Lilly Pulitzer, these designers are taking over the prep scene one sorority girl at a time.

1. Haley and the Hound

Haley and the Hound is what I consider to be a “mature" spin-off of Lily Pulitzer, mature being used lightly (you can only be so sophisticated wearing elephant and starfish dresses). Haley and the Hound has a variety of dresses, tunics, tops and bottoms that are perfect for a variety of events. Check out their T-Shirt Dresses or their line of tunics for an easy and stylish outfit. What's really great about this brand is that their pieces can be styled for events as simple as everyday errands, to social outings such as going out to the bar with your girlfriends.

My personal favorites:
Coral Floral Haley Tunic
Lime Seersucker Madeline Dress

2. Duffield Lane

For those of you skeptical of the preppy lifestyle, Duffield Lane is for you. While their line does embrace a nautical and beach vibe, they stay away from the crazy patterns that are intimidating to girls who aren't comfortable pledging their undying devotion to seashells and seahorses quite yet. Summer weddings, fancy dinners and graduation parties are where Duffield Lane items will really shine. Their dresses are simple, neat and sophisticated. Try their Blaire swing dress (pictured above) or their Grace shift dress. Wearing Duffield Lane people will think you are one classy lady, even if you're really taking shots behind the bar.

My Favorite Pieces:

Grace Dress in White with Sea Foam

Blaire Swing Dress in Sky Blue

3. Dayton K

Now here is a store that has something for everyone; Dayton K offers a line of dresses that are suitable for all ages and are more versatile than anything you've seen at Vineyard Vines. Their dresses are great for literally anything. Work at the office? Sure. Dinner with the grandparents? Absolutely. Day Drink? Definitely! The best part of Dayton K's line this year is that they really do attract to women on either side of the preppy spectrum. There are styles for those who love to stick out with pieces like a sea creature dress, but there are also more subtle designs for those who may not want fingers pointed at them (also known as black).

Try these:

The Emma Dress in Black

The Harper Dress in Pink Polka Dot

Whether your summer plans consist of working 24/7 or watching every episode of Gilmore Girls on Netflix, these three fashion brands can help you take your collegiate wardrobe to the next level. After all, there is such a thing as having too much Lily right? Probably not, but regardless these designers can help you live out your dream of being your pledge class' Jackie Kennedy. Happy shopping!

A Few Thoughts Every College Freshman Has

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
