Musicals have been greatly revolutionized in the past two years, and the effects are being felt by the public. A certain appreciation for Broadway has filled the air and live shows light up New York City as tickets sell out. Here are a few of those glittering musicals that are simply must-sees:
1. "Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet 1812"
This brilliant musical features the incredibly talented Denée Benton and the stunning Josh Groban. Based on War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, the Great Comet is an astounding story of 19th century Russia adapted cleverly into music by Dave Malloy. Such a story has a soundtrack beautifully unique enough to match, never before has melody accompanied emotion so well (at least in my humble opinion). The Great Comets unique staging and creative display of the story they tell makes it an intimate and joyful experience. Truly a must-see!
2. "Something Rotten"
Something Rotten, a musical written about Nick Bottom, the protagonist and a writer in the time of Shakespeare, is mostly enjoyed as a show for a fun-night-out. Known for its comedic flair and its bright, witty presence, Something Rotten is a guaranteed night of laughs mixed in with bright music and costumes and a few spontaneous dance numbers-it is a musical after all. What more could anyone ask for?
3. "Waitress"
Waitress, a musical based on the movie "Waitress" by Adrienne Shelly, is a story of perseverance, comedy, love, lust, hurt and all else in between. Backed by an incredible soundtrack by pop artist Sara Bareilles, the musical is sung and spoken in ups and downs of happiness and disappointment. Each moment and song keeps the audience hanging on every word as they see pieces of themselves in the characters. It is a show that will have you leaving with a warm heart and, at least in my case, tears in your eyes.
