You know that nightmare you have, where you win the award of your dreams. You're standing on stage grasping your award, the crowd on its feet roaring with applause. Your mom is beaming with pride. Just as you begin your acceptance speech, a man in a headset runs out on stage, stopping you mid-sentence. He says there's been a mistake, and takes the award out of your hands.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 79th annual Academy Awards! After an evening of beautiful gowns, amazing movies and incredible tributes to the world's greatest filmmakers, the night ended in the ultimate cringe-fest, as co-presenters Warren Beaty and Faye Dunaway handed the Oscar for Best Picture to the producers of "La La Land," when the award was actually for "Moonlight."
As the crew of "La La Land" began their acceptance speech, a stage manager rushed into the group. Things got awkward real quick. Emma Stone's and other cast member's faces quickly changed from joy to confusion then shock. Warren Beaty approached the mic and explained that the card they were given was the Best Actress envelope, which was given to Emma Stone for "La La Land."
As the crew of "La La Land," gave back their Oscars and handed them over to the producers of "Moonlight," it was hard to remember a moment nearly as cringe-y. The moments that make you feel so uncomfortable, so dead inside, you can't imagine anything worse. These moments aren't "Here's your Oscar, never-mind!" level of cringe-y, but they're pretty darn close:
1. Steve Harvey crowning the wrong Miss Universe (2015).
The first ever televised bait-and-switch. How could we forget Steve Harvey crowning the first runner-up, Miss Columbia, as Miss Universe before having to remove the title to give it to the real winner, Miss Philippines aka Pia Wurtzbach. Awk-ward.
2. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell presenting Tom Brady the Super Bowl trophy.
"Deflategate" was the biggest scandal of the 2016 NFL season. So it was truly poetic that Tom Brady would return from his suspension and go on to win the SuperBowl. Goodell was not pleased. For Pats fans, it was the ultimate payback. For everyone else, it was just uncomfortable.
3. Being included in the Academy Awards "In Memoriam" when you're still very much alive.
The "In Memoriam" segment of the Academy Awards is usually one of the most powerful emotional segments of the night. This year, however, Australian producer Jan Chapman, her friends and family were caught off guard when her picture was included in the heart-wrenching video tribute. Janet Patterson, who had worked on a project with Chapman in the past, did pass away in October. According to reports, Chapman was mistaken for Patterson in a photo, which led to her being included in the segment. Sad.
