Freedom Of The Press Is Being Threatened

Publishing classified documents that reveal wrongdoing by governments should not be punished.

Freedom Of The Press Is Being Threatened

The charges against Julian Assange under the Espionage Act are a threat to press freedom.

Whether you like Assange or not what he did by publishing the documents he was given is no different than what journalists do. We can all agree that the Pentagon Papers did a huge service to the country, but at the time we were having the same debate. After all, they were classified documents too.

Those in behalf of prosecuting Assange argue that he is not a journalist and since he is accused of assisting Chelsea Manning, the person responsible for stealing the documents, he, therefore, should be prosecuted. But he was already charged separately with helping Manning and we don't yet know if he actually did that until it's proven in court.

What I'm talking about though, are the charges that criminalize journalistic actions. The new charges brought against Assange under the Espionage Act, as explained in this Wapo article. Those are what poses a threat to press freedom by undermining First Amendment protections that are supposed to protect everyone regardless if they are journalists or not.

If we start punishing whistleblowers, where does this take us, where do we draw the line? Investigative journalists and whistleblowers could be afraid to do their job or speak out and hold institutions accountable if these charges go through.

Another argument is that by publishing names of people working with the U.S. Assange put lives in danger. But that should be an ethical issue and not a justification for the charges, especially since there was no evidence that the WikiLeaks dump of documents pertaining to the Afghan war caused any harm or loss of life, an article shortly after the release shows.

In a time when the press has been under more attacks than I have ever witnessed - "fake news" has entered into our vocabulary, used liberally by anyone who doesn't like what's being said by the media, and the president of the United States has called the media "the true enemy of the people." I think it's important for us to stand up to any threats to one of the most important parts of our First Amendment, one that protects infringement on the other freedoms.

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.

To My Loving Boyfriend,

  • Thank you for all that you do for me
  • Thank you for working through disagreements with me
  • Thank you for always supporting me
  • I appreciate you more than words can express
  • You have helped me grow and become a better person
  • I can't wait to see where life takes us next
  • I promise to cherish every moment with you
  • Thank you for being my best friend and confidante
  • I love you and everything you do

To start off, here's something I don't say nearly enough: thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You do so much for me that I can't even put into words how much I appreciate everything you do - and have done - for me over the course of our relationship so far. While every couple has their fair share of tiffs and disagreements, thank you for getting through all of them with me and making us a better couple at the other end. With any argument, we don't just throw in the towel and say we're done, but we work towards a solution that puts us in a greater place each day. Thank you for always working with me and never giving up on us.

Ah, yes, good old Hauppauge. We are that town in the dead center of Long Island that barely anyone knows how to pronounce unless they're from the town itself or live in a nearby area. Hauppauge is home to people of all kinds. We always have new families joining the community but honestly, the majority of the town is filled with people who never leave (high school alumni) and elders who have raised their kids here. Around the town, there are some just some landmarks and places that only the people of Hauppauge will ever understand the importance or even the annoyance of.
