Located on the first floor in the Student Center, ThreadBare is a gender-neutral clothing consignment store. ThreadBare is a part of the Missouri Student Unions Entrepreneurial Program, which is a program that allows students to compete for a rent-free space in the Student Center to run their business in for one year.
"ThreadBare is a thrift clothing store built on a gender-neutral, low-price model," co-founder Kyle Gunby says. "We came up with the idea for the business from a ton of brainstorming (and a few Blue Moons at the Heidelberg) with my co-founder Gabriel Riekhof."
After Gunby and Riekhof came up with the framework, they invited Zach Bine and Allison Fitts to join them on leadership. "Our ultimate goal is to remind people that the articles they wear are 'just clothes.'" Gunby says, "It’s the person that’s wearing them that truly matters to us."
"At the end of the day, we are not here to celebrate sales and what we are selling," Gunby says, "we are here to celebrate the person that is wearing what we are selling."
ThreadBare's four founders hope that it will not only be profitable but also change society's views on gender identity. On their hopes for the future, Gunby says, "We’re not too worried about the future right now. We have the space until school lets out, and in the meantime, we’re just trying to grow and evolve as we all figure out what it takes to make a small business work."
Every article of clothing in ThreadBare is suitable for anybody regardless of gender, age or race. The products are also affordable--everything's less than $15. All clothes are bought from a Goodwill shop and other secondhand stores.
ThreadBare also encourages people to have their own style and stand up for it.
