Thoughts When Watching the Tar Heels

Being a Heels fan is fun and rewarding, but sometimes we really don't know what to think. We have our chants and cheers just like we have those questions that leave us scratching our heads and telling ourselves that we're better than this. We love our boys but sometimes we just don't understand.

1. Why are we being lazy?

The boys are down by 10 and all of sudden we start to be lazy? Why? The game is not won yet. We don’t we move around and actually do something? I know Roy has you conditioned enough, so why are you acting tired?

2. Newbies are putting in work

Maye and Bradley are giving as much effort as anyone else. We see them scoring points and we wonder where the heck they come from. Maye puts in so much hard work and it pays off on his points and rebounds. Bradley comes out of nowhere and fills up a lane to score or block a shot.

3. We aren’t making foul shots because...?

We know Roy makes practice hell with foul shots. So why are we looking like we’ve never shot them before? Take a breath and focus boys. We all know we can be the best free throw shooting team.

4. There’s the GOAT?

The exact words that come out of everyone's mouth when Heels fans see MJ at the games. We wonder what words of wisdom he’s giving to the team after the game. We wonder what it’s like for the team members to be good friends with The GOAT.

5. Can Roy call a timeout please?

Roy does this thing where he lets teams get a run on us and doesn’t call a timeout. Why? We need to let our boys take a breath and get their shit together.

6. We better beat Dooke.

No matter who we play, the biggest came we wait for is the Dooke game. No matter what game it is, we compare it to Dooke. “If we play like this against Dooke, we should win”.

7. We need a 3, Jackson.

Down by a few and needing a couple of 3’s. Can Justin Jackson put in work for us and have hot hands. We need them bad. Plus, it’s fun just to see how many 3’s he can put down in a game.

8. How many stupid fouls can we get?

Swatting at the ball? Seriously? Over the back? Seriously. Why are we making ridiculous fouls in the first half when we literally have 0 fouls to give. Can we please be smart with the fouls you chose to make?

9. Can I have a beer?

As a Heels fan, we tend to have so much anxiety during some games that drinking seems to make it look not so bad. The stupid things we do seem to not be so bad when alcohol is involved.

10. Is Theo a senior yet?

We love Theo. He puts in so much work. But lord it seems like that boy has been here forever. Nobody can forget the dynamic duo of Barnes and Pinson. Wait...that never happened? When you ask Carolina fans about Theo, they say “I thought he graduated like two years ago.” But plot twist, this is his junior year.

11. We haven’t seen some of these jerseys in forever

Those who loved the 07-08 season loved Green, Hansbrough, Lawson, Ginyard, and Ellington. All of sudden this kid comes on the court with #14 and you automatically miss that group of boys so much. You also realize that your favorite players can never be replaced. Some of our favorite players didn’t get a retired jersey so seeing other players in those jerseys make us realize how much we miss them.

12. Can we put in the Blue Steel?

Up by more than 20 with ten minutes left in the 2nd and we want Blue Steel. We love watching these boys play and score. We scream louder for them than anything else. We know they put in so much work and they deserve to be recognized.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
