Thoughts For 'Harry Potter' Weekend

Free Form (formerly known as ABC Family) has had the knack for "Harry Potter" in that every weekend that is remotely celebratory. When that happens the world of Free Form viewers split into two groups of peoples: Muggles and Wizards. Those clearly muggles have major problems with the "apparent obsession" with "that one kid with glasses" or whatever. And wizards bow down to Free Form who is actually the best. Thoughts go something like this...

Day 1

Muggles: This, again. Like seriously, didn't we just have a "Harry Potter" weekend last week? When am I going to be able to turn on the TV and be able to just not see those three meddling kids. Like they seriously cannot go a single movie without almost dying. All for what? The one kid who almost died as a baby and then is hated by the no-nose guy?

Wizards: Welp. There goes my life. This weekend will be packed hour by hour with the greatest saga ever turned into movies. There's almost no time for sleep. And snacks will be strictly limited to what I can bring to the couch during the credits. And don't even remind me about homework. It's not going to get done. Just accept that now because once it starts, there's no time for a breakdown.

Day 2

Muggles: No, WHY are the same movies playing over again. It's like they don't even have to try for the weekend to do their jobs. The channel is purely lazy. Also, they just assume that everyone likes these movies, what about what I want. And does it have to be all weekend? Can't we get a break?

Wizards: Let's do this. Today I will focus on trying to catch things I didn't see in yesterday's showings of the movies. Plus today there is going to be a movie that they didn't play yesterday. And we've gotta prepare ourselves for tomorrow, because they'll play the ending and all the emotions will come. It's bad enough trying to reign in the feels for the endings of movies four through six. But seven part two is just going to kill us, so gotta just mentally prepare for a breakdown.

Day 3

Muggles: Honestly, a third day? I don't know why I bother turning on the TV anymore.

Wizards: Okay. Today's the last day. Maybe I can just have the TV on and still do some homework. Nope? Okay, that's fine, we've already accepted that. Today's about trying to catch things in the later movies. Little clues that lead up to "The Deathly Hallows" parts one and two. We'll just have to play catch up this week, because nothing is more important than making sure you know every hidden clue in every movie that gives secrets about "The Deathly Hallows." And let's not forget that by the end of Day 3, we'll get to enjoy the two parts again and maybe end up crying ourselves to sleep, but this is what we live for, so let's do this.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
