First off, I should probably express that I love the internet. It has afforded me so many opportunities like reading screenplays for the Atlanta Film Festival and even writing for the Odyssey. The internet is totally a thing of the future, and I support all the online communities that have fostered from the internet. However, I do have some problems with the internet.
On Personal Branding:
Individuals that sign up for social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr have the power to create and represent themselves how they want. Our generation has the stereotype of often being criticized for sharing too much information on our social media platforms. However, that critique has become obsolete. For example, your mom is more likely to post a status on taking the dog to a vet than you actually are. The younger generation has become more focused on honing their image and is really thoughtful for what they put on social media and how they want others to perceive them.
On Selfies:
I think it's great that individuals want to document how they look at a certain moment and period of their life and share that with others if they think that's an accurate representation of themselves or how they want others to perceive them. However, I don't appreciate when people feel the need to preface their selfies with an apology. Bottom line: Own your selfies and be proud of them.
On Internet History:
Chances are your parents have warned you that once you post something on the internet, it stays there forever. I know that this true, and you can retrieve anything from the internet. However, at this point, there is so much content out there that it's less and less likely that people are going to care about digging up your past internet behaviors. We are able to delete and edit things so quickly that it is as if nothing ever even existed.
Overall, I very much appreciate the internet and all my relationships that I have formed through it. I still want to be a part of the online community and voice my love but also frustrations and concerns for various topics while reaching a seemingly infinite amount of people. I'm personally glad that I have the opportunity to do so.
