On Friday night, as part of my routine, I was scrolling through in Twitter feed, doing my best to stay informed of the events that happen during the day. That’s when I saw a headline that Christina Grimmie, "The Voice" contestant, got shot in Orlando after her concert and was in critical condition. The next day I woke up to the news that she didn’t survive.
In less than 24 hours later, I was reading in Twitter headlines about another shooting in Orlando. This time, it took place in the gay club, Pulse, and the body count as around 20 dead. Later it was confirmed that it was 49 dead and 53 wounded.
I’m sad and angered with all of these events occurring in a city that I have visited many times and which I considered to move for college. I want to talk about all the wrong things with our gun policy, the lack of attention to mental health and how racism and homophobia are still alive. I want to point fingers and blame our politicians for not passing laws to prevent all these deaths. I want to blame the FBI for not following up with Omar Mateen. Another part of me wants to pretend as if nothing has happened, just keep going with my life of a college student. But today I can’t do any of those.
I just want to say love is love. There is not the strongest bond between two people than love. It could be the love between a parent and their child. The love between two partners. The love among friends. The love for your home country. The love between owners and pets. The love to mother nature. The love for your job. We sacrifice for love. Since day one, parents around the world are sacrificing to make sure their kids are safe and happy. With love comes compassion, empathy, acceptances and respect. Everyone has different opinions about everyday issues. However, that does not give the right to someone to bully, threaten, abuse, or kill someone.
If we want to see a change in the world, we should start with ourselves and ask if we are accepting everyone by who their true colors and not by the mask we put on every day. Also, if you see something, say something. Report to the authorities if you are afraid or concern of someone’s behavior. There is no need to stay silent when possible people lives’ are at risk.
Finally, my message goes directly to the LBGT community: We stand behind you and as it may seem hard at this time, but don't stop being yourselves. The more people together the harder will be to bring us down. Remember that in the end love will always win, in the words of Albus Dumbledore himself, “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light." Breath in and keep on fighting.
