When I found out Maroon 5 was going to be the headline for the Super Bowl halftime show, I had a lot of thoughts running through my mind. I wasn't very excited, to say the least; don't get me wrong, I do like Maroon 5. Maroon 5 was a band I remember loving as a small child. I was about 2 years old when Songs About Jane came out and I remember jamming to it nonstop when I was around 5 years old. In my opinion Songs About Jane and It Won't Be Soon Before Long was Maroon 5's best albums and their music wasn't as appealing to me after that; their newest music became overplayed radio hits that I didn't enjoy. I wasn't against the idea of them being the halftime performers, but I thought it would have been better back in 2007 when I loved their music the most.
As the Super Bowl grew closer it was announced that Travis Scott would join Adam Levine and his band on stage. I do enjoy Travis Scott, but this combination made no-sense to me. I was preparing for this to be an awkward halftime show that I wasn't going to enjoy; especially since it followed the G.O.A.T. Justin Timberlake. The week before Super Bowl Sunday my friend informed me that SpongeBob would be incorporated. Great, there is no way this could get any worst. My standards were officially pretty low.
The day was finally here. I sat through probably the most boring first half of football played this season. Maroon 5 took the stage and opened with Harder to Breathe; my hopes were slowly rising. Shortly after this song, the famous SpongeBob halftime performance clip started playing and it was used to introduce Travis Scott who came out performing Sicko Mode. I enjoy the song, but watching Adam Levine trying to dance along was just awkward. I would've enjoyed more songs by Travis but overall, adding him wasn't as weird as I had anticipated. Maroon 5 performed other hits such as Girls Like You and She Will Be Loved; my absolute favorites.
I didn't hate the halftime show like most people. It was actually better than I had anticipated. Adam Levine stripping wasn't the most comfortable thing to watch, but overall, it wasn't a disaster. It wasn't full of random gimmicks which I enjoyed. I probably wouldn't keep watching this performance over and over again, but I don't regret watching it. Honestly, this halftime show reminded me of all the songs by Maroon 5 I did love growing up, which I was happy about. Overall, I'd rate this year's halftime show as an 8/10. It wasn't my favorite, but it definitely wasn't one of my least favorites. So Maroon 5 and Travis Scott, thank you for exceeding my expectations.
