The title sounds fancy, doesn’t it?
But I got the idea when I started thinking about how many books are turned into movies, movies are turned into books, books are turned into a TV series. My first thought would be that these adaptations would quickly get very boring for audiences. Would people really want to see the same story and same plot over and over just in different forms?
Short answer: yes.
Long answer: yes.
This came to me as I was watching The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. It is a modern day interpretation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice but in vlog form. Each of the vlogs are between three to five minutes long. It is easy to watch four or five or fifty at once. It’s great to watch if you have read the book, would have been fun to watch if you have watched the movie, and must be utterly joyful to watch if this is your first interaction with the story.
I had been wanting to watch the series for a while but wanted to wait until I had read the books to enjoy it more, and I am very glad that I did. The series modernizes every aspect of the story, making it seem like the story is taking place in real life and that we are actually following Lizzie’s life.
Such a way to interact with an audience is much different than what a movie or a book does. It makes the audience a much bigger part of the story than any other medium does. I was not bored even though I could predict how the story would play out. The subtle details that changed to fit modern times kept me on my toes and really made me enjoy the timeless tale.
I suppose it is those subtle changes in the details that keep audiences interested in various adaptations of the same story.
