On 14th of December 2017, I took my last final. Right after that, I was considered a post-graduate student. In two months, I am about to receive my Master of Arts in Teaching and I cannot be more thrilled. I am finally done being the student and now I can teach. However, post-grad life kind of sucks! Here’s the thought process of a post-grad human.
The first few days:
You are over the moon! The world is your oyster. You’re finally done with school. No more classes, assignments, or tests! You’ll be celebrating with your best friends and family.
When reality sits in:
You’re unemployed. Your life is completely different. Your mom, dad, aunt, and pet monkey are asking about when you’re fresh out of school… just two days ago.
Soon, you start feeling mopey:
Around the same time you realize you’re unemployed, you start realizing that you’re finished with school. The last final was your last. It’s time to hang your hat because the show is over. It is definitely a hard pill to swallow. Being a student is all you have known since you were in Pre-K or Kindergarten. Think about it, it’s twenty-plus years of your life! Yikes! You start missing your friends, the feeling of being on your own (if you dormed), and now you have to adjust to being back home… permanently. Frankly, it sucks. Personally, college was an amazing time for me. I struggled personally and academically, but I have met people who have made my life more colorful and enriching. I grew as a person which is great. Personal growth is key in life.
Eventually, you accept it:
Acceptance: Alright, you’ve partied, faced the prospect of unemployment, and moped. Now, you’re looking at life with a renewed sense of hope. Life just continues. At this point, you’re looking for jobs and trying to make money in the mean time before you step into your career. For me, it is teaching.
I have learned a lot while at school and I am glad to have had the opportunity that is denied to many elsewhere and even in the United States. I am not sure what the future holds for me but I am looking forward to it. Life is like a box of chocolate. You never know what you’re going to get!
