First Thoughts On Netflix's Stranger Things

So unless you've been under a rock lately, you may have heard of Netflix's new breakout original series Stranger Things. After being released in mid-July, the show has become one of the most talked about series of the summer. As someone who has a Netflix account I felt it was necessary to finally see what all the hype was about, and so I did.

Now before you freak out with concern that this will be full of spoilers, let me tell you that it is NOT. I am only giving my thoughts on the opening sequence which lasts all of 4 minutes in the first episode. Calm yourselves.

Here we go!

1. So the show takes place in Hawkins, Indiana. Is that a real place?

NOPE.

2. Of course, there are flickering lights in a secret lab late at night, with one man in the entire facility for SOME REASON. So cliché.

3. This alien is badass. Perhaps a reference to Ridley Scott's Alien??

4. I'm really loving this 80's vibe. You have the music, cinematography, and they're even playing Dungeons and Dragons! It's very charming.

5. And the kids! Look at them! They're so lovable from the start! (This isn't a picture from the show obviously, but it works)

6. "I think you should listen to your mother." - every dad's response when he just can't deal

7. SQUAD SQUAD SQUAD!

8. Crap, he's riding alone at night. Some shit's about to go down

9. NOOOOOO, RUNNNNNNN!!!! AND WHY IS NO ONE HOME! THIS IRRESPONSIBILITY!!! (I should have expected this from the title of the episode, but still!)

10. I feel weird knowing that this 10 maybe 12-year-old boy knows how to lock and load a hunting rifle in seconds. But, in this case with a monster trying to kill you, I'll let it slide.

And..... that's all there is before the title sequence.

Wow.

I was literally lost for words after only four minutes of this series. I recently finished all 8 episodes and let me tell you it was one of the best stories I've seen in a long time. It has memorable characters, a compelling plot, dark undertones coupled with light humor, and a kickass female protagonist. Plus, the 80's film vibe is so charming and nostalgic for everyone even if you weren't born at the time. I highly encourage anyone who hasn't seen it to watch this show.IMMEDIATELY.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
