As each semester passes, new interests in the world are found as well as the extreme dislike of the other classes one has to take in college. From the general education classes, math classes, diversity courses and so much more, ultimately when it comes time to advising and picking out classes for the next semester, it can be a real drag. Being in my junior year of college currently, it is almost a little weird that I still need a bit of help when considering my classes, especially since I changed my major. With the sign up days right around the corner, more so right after spring break, these are my thoughts on picking my next year's classes.
1. Why do I have to take these classes?
I always dislike the fact that I have to take some random class just to fulfill a graduation requirement. I understand that I need to know the basic skills in math, algebra, etc., but I'm a fine arts major, algebra isn't going to help me later on. (More than likely, I'm jinxing myself right now actually.)
2. The eternal struggle of playing "tag" when trying to meet with your advisor.
You would think their office hours would be correct, but sometimes it can be really tricky, especially when everyone else also waits until the last minute for advising.
3. I am probably going to take this class, despite not needing it.
I can't help it, I just really love learning about different things...as long as it is of my own choice. While I did not need to take Vietnam War History, I'm really happy that I did!
4. I wonder if my friend would take this with me.
"Listen, I know you're not a history major in anyway, but you should totally take Ancient History with me because you need another three credits."
This was actually me when I asked my friend to take Ancient History with me.
5. How can I avoid all 8 a.m. and Friday classes as much as possible?
The last thing I need is another double whammy of an 8 a.m. on a Friday!
6. Is it really all that bad if I don't finish in four years?
I've always known that I'll probably be here for maybe five years, but that isn't that big of a deal right?
7. Do I decide to trust "Ratemyprofessors.com" right now or not?
These reviews are either accurate reflections of the teacher, or someone did not have a good semester.
8. Can I just go straight into my major requirements please?
I feel like sometimes you can be so swamped with the general education courses that you'll never make it into your specific major. At least I started with all my basic art classes early!
All in all, college in my own opinion is so much about learning, growth and taking the moment to see all the new possibilities. While I've taken a lot of random credit classes, failed one class before and other things, I do not regret any of the classes I've taken because they've helped shape what I want to do with my life. Also, now scheduling is such a breeze because I've had to work the past three years around my crazy life, so I think I'll be good to go from now on. With all these thoughts in mind, advising appointment and class picking days, here I come!
