Thoughts From An Intern

Is it 5 o' clock yet?

Most colleges require students to take an internship before graduation. It allows students to get their feet in the door before they are set free post-graduation. Internships could be in a hospital, business office or with a music producer. During an internship you get to meet new people, learn about the field and determine if this is something you want to do for the rest of your life.

Here are some thoughts most interns may have while at work:

1. Should I add "-the intern" after I introduce myself?

"Hi I'm __, the intern". And on some days, you just introduce yourself solely as "the intern".

2. I don't know any of the terminology

Starting from the first day on the job, you were clueless on the terminology of the business. "Can you help me with the accounts payable?" "What's that?" Thankfully, your boss taught you well and you can now help your colleagues with anything.

3. Making jokes with the CEO, no big deal

Even though you're at the bottom of the organizational chart, you still have conversations with the CEO or director when he or she is in the office. Despite her/his intimidating demeanor, he/she is a normal person that has hobbies and likes to crack jokes with everyone.

4. Is it 5 o' clock yet?

Even if you like your job, you spend most of your time looking at the clock. They say that it's "five o' clock somewhere in the world," but you wish "somewhere in the world" was here.

5. Invited to the monthly meeting, I'm making it far in life

Feeling extra special when you get asked to sit in the meeting with the rest of the team.

6. I'm emotionally attached to these people

People come and go. But you befriend so many during your time that you get emotionally attached to them. Every time someone tells you that a colleague sent in their two weeks notice, it breaks your heart.

7. I'm the person they go to for a millennial perspective

You are probably the youngest person in the office. So when they need opinions on whether millennials would download a certain app, you're the go-to person.

8. These are some important people I'm working with

Everyone in the company (no matter the rank) should feel greatly appreciated. Your colleagues are wonderful people who dedicate their time to better the company. Each member of the team is important--from the CEO to the Sales/Accounting team to the intern.

9. Why does the IT guy always mess with me

As an intern, it feels like being a freshmen in high school. There is always someone that likes to poke fun at you. But you just have fun and mess with him back.

10. I can't look at my computer any longer

You can binge watch Netflix for 3 days straight, but can't stare at a computer for 8 hours. So you find yourself walking away from your desk or stretching so your eyes can take a break.

11. I'm actually learning some things about the real world

Throughout your internship, you've learned more than you expected to. It could be that this field interests you or it didn't. But you learned how to interact with colleagues, what kind of boss you respect, how this company is making an impact on the community, how to be a working member of society, etc. You are now ready to apply for grown-up (paying) jobs.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. 1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
