Honest Thoughts From A Freshman During The First Semester

During my senior year in high school we all spent hours upon hours applying to universities, applying for scholarships, picking places to live, scheduling classes, and buying supplies. After all this preparation, we thought we had this whole college thing under control. How hard could it be, right? But hen the first week of school arrived, and we started to realize that there’s more to college than figuring out roommates and picking a meal plan. Here are a few thoughts that every freshman at LSU has probably had at some point during their first semester:

1. There’s no uniform and no dress code. I can just wear whatever I want everyday?

2. I’ll do anything for a free t-shirt.

3. “Use the map on the LSU app if you get lost." Whatever, I won't get lost.

4. Help. I’m lost.

5. Why is the line for the CC’s in Middleton always so long?

6. Where is Himes? What does 52A mean?

7. My class starts at 8:30, so I should probably get there at 8:10.

8. Syllabus week: I don’t know what everyone’s freaking out about. This college thing is easy.

9. Midterm Week: I have 4 tests and paper due this week, and I haven’t slept in days. I’m dropping out.

10. Is Freshman 15 a real thing? I should start going to the URec.

11. LOL, Look at those high school kids touring. They probably think all of us college kids are so cool.

12. Wait a minute, I was one of those touring high school kids last year.

13. Maybe I should change my major. I could go to law school or something.

14. Oh my goodness. A senior just looked at me.

15. Why do I have to get my own scantron? Where do I even get my own scantron?

16. What’s a blue book?

17. I found the secret Subway!

18. I’ll go if there will be free food.

19. I really should have learned how to study in high school.

20. Do I have to ask to go to the bathroom?

By the end of the first semester, freshmen should have figured out some of the secrets of LSU, learned how to conquer the bus system, and learned how to grab a table during lunch rush at the Union, all the while balancing schoolwork and a social life. As a freshman myself, in just the few weeks I’ve been here, I’ve realized that college is more difficult than it appeared in the endless pamphlets and magazines I saw. Until us freshmen get the hang of things, we’ll continue giving everyone else a good laugh.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
