Thoughts Every College Student Has the First Week Back

Fall semester is just around the corner and college students nationally are preparing for the move back and transitioning back into the college grind. This week involves moving into a new space, getting classes in order, and figuring a new routine for the semester. While everyone's experience may differ, the first week back is a pretty standard week and a very relatable time for all students. To celebrate (or dread) the upcoming week back, I have collected some moments that every student will surely encounter. Let the nostalgia begin.

1. When you wake up the first day of classes and think you missed your alarm. Let the panic hit.

2. When you realize that not only is it Monday, but it is also the first day of a long semester ahead.

3. When you put on the outfit you planned out the night before, but somehow your nervous excitement is really taking away from the look as a whole.

4. When the professor waives the waiting list for the class so you automatically get enrolled.

5. When you walk into a small class and don’t recognize anyone familiar. You are disappointed until an attractive student walks in, and you are suddenly happy to have an empty seat next to you.

6. When the professor tells the class he will always let them know when assignments are due, but the syllabus says to expect pop quizzes.

7. When your teacher tells the class that the textbook is still in stock at the bookstore, but after waiting an hour in line to pick-up your required reading, it says it's unavailable.

8. When you are purchasing the required textbooks, and just one class alone is $300 worth of textbooks.

9. When that hour-break you gave yourself between classes is already paying off.

10. When the professor asks the class to go around and introduce themselves and you have to pretend like you will remember everyone’s name.

11. When your professor is going through the syllabus and reads that the estimated time spent on this class per week is between seven to nine hours. You then do the mental math of how much time you will spend on this class for the whole semester...then regret it.

12. When the professor announces to the class that there will be group projects, and you look over at your friends to secure the group.

13. When you realize having class at noon is going to turn into your ‘working lunch.’

14. When you are trying to anticipate how hard the class you’re dreading is going to be and read reviews about your professor online. You find out the teacher is rated easy, and you celebrate the survival of your GPA.

15. When the professor asks the class to turn to page 172 of the textbook on the first day of class.

16. When a friend says how awesome the class is that you recommended them to take.

17. When your homework assignment is to send an email to the professor describing yourself and your plans for the semester.

18. When you get 100 percent on your syllabus quiz without studying, because every syllabus is the same.

No matter how the first week of classes begins, you have the whole semester ahead of you to meet new people, learn exciting new things in class, and complete another step of your college career.

Happy Schooling!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
