Thoughts Every College Student Has In April

April is our own special version of Hell.

College is all fun and games until April rolls around. I am still convinced professors congregate in a conference room and gather around a circle table to plan all of their assignments to co-exist in the same week. April is the month where students who work ahead of time start feeling the pressure and the procrastinators truly push their limits. April is the final month(disregarding finals week in May) standing between college students and summer vacation; making it that much more antagonistic. During April, we as college students all have a number of thoughts in common, starting with ...

One month left in this semester!

Only four weeks left of having to wake up at 8 a.m. to go learn physiology! Only four weeks left until I get to forget about homework for the summer!

Oh god ... There's one month left in the semester!

I still have four papers, three presentations, and two tests to finish before finals week ...

If I prioritize and start now I can finish everything on time and not be too stressed out ...

Time to log on to my computer. Ooh Netflix just added that TV show I wanted to watch. Just one episode ...

*One entire series and countless hours later* What have I done? Not my assignments, that's for sure ...

It's okay I'll start tomorrow.

I'm only a day behind, no big deal.

There's a lot of fun stuff happening on campus this week...

You only go to college once and I am supposed to enjoy myself right? I can go out once or twice if I want to. College isn't just about academics, it's about enjoying my youth... Fine it's decided I'll go. I'll still have three weeks left to do work. I've done it before. I can do it again.

*Last Week of Classes* Wow where did the time go ...

I have two papers due at midnight and a presentation to give at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning. Then I have another essay due on Wednesday and my last paper due Thursday. I see a couple of all nighters in my near future.

It's Thursday, 11 p.m. and I have officially finished all of my work for this semester.

Ah I can't believe I did it!! I'm done with it ALL!

Wait ... Now I have to study for my finals ...

Screw it, I need sleep. Oh bed, how I have missed you. The library chairs got nothing on you!

*After hours of studying and test-taking finals are over and April is coming to a close*

It's done. I am so proud of myself, this semester is FINALLY over.

No more tests, no more projects, no more homework, no more stress.

Summer here I come!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
