A couple of weeks ago, I had the honor of receiving my class ring from Texas A&M. It was one of the best moments of my life thus far, and I will more than likely remember that day forever.
But with the ring came the infamous tradition of the Aggie Ring Dunk. For those who are not familiar with this tradition, you take your shiny, new ring and drop it to the bottom of a pitcher of beer (or your drink of choice). You then down the entire pitcher in order to catch the ring in your mouth.
Not knowing what I was getting myself in to, I decided to participate in this event. These are the thoughts that ran through my, and most likely many other Aggies’, head during the three and a half minutes I took to (finally) finish the pitcher:
1. “WHO in the world started this tradition?”
2. “Why did I agree to this?”
3. “I’m only half way???”
4. “Oh my gosh, everyone is going to see me throw up”
5. “Can I just quit while I’m ahead?”
6. “I’m never drinking beer again.”
7. “I hope I don’t swallow my ring.”
8. “I wonder if my mom is proud of me right now.”
9. “YOU CAN DO IT!”
10. “Is my body even able to hold this much liquid?”
11. “I am NEVER doing that again.”
If you’re planning on dunking your ring, may the odds be ever in your favor. It is definitely an adventure that will most likely get the best of you. Take comfort in the fact that you will never have to do it again, and that waiting for you at the bottom of that pitcher is your ring that ties you to the Aggie family for the rest of your life.
