I Thought I Wanted To Be An Educator

My whole life I thought education was the one and only choice for me, but then things changed.

Every child when they are younger gets asked a million times, what are you going to be when you grow up? Like a 10-year-old has any idea what their aspirations for the future will be. I remember so many times telling other people that I was going to be an educator because my mom was a teacher, so what other opportunities were there. There were only a few jobs that most females in my area took; you were either a teacher or a nurse/doctor and besides that, there wasn't a ton of opportunities.

As I got older, I had to narrow down what I was going to do in my life, if I was going to go into education, what area was I going to go into? I knew first of all that I wasn't going to go into elementary education, my patience is not good at all when it comes to teaching basic principles like addition and subtraction. I found that stuff simple when I was in elementary school and when tutoring little children I would get extremely frustrated trying to get them to understand this basic concept.

Then, when I got older I found out that I enjoyed math enormously, so I thought maybe I could go into high school education. I could become the math teacher that everybody liked even if they hated math itself. However, I found out again that while I found it concrete and understandable, I wasn't always the best about explaining it to other people, especially when some of my methods weren't exactly what the textbook taught. If I still went into education, though, I would definitely become a business teacher because helping others with accounting problems at college is one of my favorite things. In all honesty, I'm still considering getting my Ph.D. later in life and becoming an accounting professor, so I haven't given up COMPLETELY on education.

So you may be wondering, if I didn't pick education what area did I pick? I picked accounting because after a semester learning the material and self-teaching it, I absolutely fell in LOVE with it. I competed in accounting competitions and placed quite high in most of my competitions even when I felt like I was lacking some of the material presented. I love how in accounting you have all this data and you get to organize it to where others can understand it and make decisions based on the material presented. Plus, the amount of ethics in the field is fantastic because I am a very ethical person and I feel like with a job like this I can help ensure that businesses stay on the up-and-up with their financial information.

Some days I wonder if I made the right decision because accounting is really hard, and sometimes I second guess it, but I know it will all fall into place and one day I'll have my job and all the work and the stress will have been worth it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
