The Thought Of Summer "Vacation" Stresses Me Out

For college students, it's not the summer of blue skies and sandy beaches like it use to be.

Preparing for the summer stresses me out.

I said it. Yes, the thought of what they call summer "vacation" stresses me out.

Because really it's not a vacation.

Summer as a college student means either work or an internship, and if you don't have either planned you are either characterized as lazy or blessed.

If I was ever given the opportunity to have a post-college job just fall into my lap without having an internship, or the ability to not have to work to pay for college expenses -- then I would consider it to be the best day of my life.

However, reality sinks in and so does the fact that in a couple of short years we all will be paying for everything on our own, with virtually every business expecting an internship in our field of study before considering hiring us.

So if every business expects you to have internship experience, then finding and landing an internship shouldn't be hard, right?

Wrong.

Depending on your major and location for the summer, finding an internship can be rather challenging. January through March are consumed with application after application; with fingers crossed, you are able to get something lined up for the summer. Especially if you are an underclassman trying to secure something, your options are even more limited.

During this period of waiting, we avoid and dread any question remotely close to "what are your summer plans?" as some look on and wonder why you haven't secured anything.

So I think it's easy to understand why us college students are stressed right now about summer.

But have no fear friends, good things come to those who wait... and apply for a thousand internships. You are bound to have one opportunity come back if you are realistic in what you are applying for, and put the time into your applications.

So my best piece of advice to the stressed college student:

Apply. Apply. Apply.

Don't give up when you get rejections because it's going to happen, and happen, and happen some more.

But then one, or two will emerge and offer you a position -- and you will never feel more relieved.

So keep pushing out applications, and stay as positive as you can, because something is sure to come your way soon...

And then, you can begin to relax.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

You're away from home and your mom who can take care of you and all you really want to do is just be in your own bed. Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
