Thoughts On Immigration From A Latina

"The bosum of America is open to receive not only the Opulent and respectable Stranger, but the oppressed and persecuted of all Nations and Religions; whom we shall welcome a participation of all our rights and privileges, if by decency and propriety of conduct they appear to merit the enjoyment" George Washington

Dear Mr. Trump,

On January 25th, at 1:30 in the afternoon, you signed an executive order stating that you will begin construction for the wall on the U.S and Mexico border. If that didn't anger me enough, I came to find out that you're having taxpayers pay for it. You didn't get your way with having Mexico pay for it, so why are you putting this on the American people?

Let me tell you about myself. Both of my parents were born in Colombia. They came to the United States when they were 20 years old. Left their family and belongings behind, why? So my brother and I can have a better life than they did, so we can have better opportunities and we can study and follow our dreams.

My parents were chasing the "American Dream." The dream that you, and your parents had. I wouldn't change anything about where I come from, for I am immensely proud of being Hispanic. My entire family lives in Colombia, therefore I have been given the opportunity to travel there several times. Seeing it first hand, I can understand my parents reasoning a bit more clearly.

Immigration is an issue I hold close to my heart. Don't get me wrong. I do firmly believe that those immigrants who have committed a crime and are dangerous should be deported to their home country. But what about the innocent ones like my parents? They worked so hard to give me what I have now.

I often hear those saying that immigrants are "stealing" our jobs. In reality, they aren't. These individuals are working jobs you and I would never work as a first-hand job. These individuals are cleaning houses and banks, yet still paying their taxes.

A perfect example is my mom. My mom works three jobs. Her full-time job is cleaning a house for a wonderful family. Then she works at a retail store and cleans a bank every night. I'm sure if I was to ask my mom, she wouldn't want me cleaning a house as my full-time job. My mom is more American than she is Colombian -- always celebrating the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving.

Let's think of it a different way. This entire nation is made of immigrants. This land was one of Native Americans, and we came here. Look in your family tree, somewhere in your family, there was an individual that came here illegally. Think about your wife! She's an immigrant who got her citizenship when she married you. I would like to see you try to deport her.

I hope you really think this through and realize what you're doing is a mistake. This wall will not create any more jobs, the jobs are already there for the American people. It's up to them to look for it, to chase after it. And remember this, a nation full of immigrants, makes a stronger nation.

Sincerely,

A worried American with Hispanic descent.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

You're away from home and your mom who can take care of you and all you really want to do is just be in your own bed. Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
