I have often felt like I am from a different planet when I mention to a group of friends that I don’t mind the cold weather, in fact, I actually like it. They look at me as if I had just told them I was a psychopath. “How could you say that” and “That’s not normal,” they say as they try to convince me of how awful any temperature below 45 is, but I stand my ground and explain why.
I’m the type of person who would rather be freezing than hot, at night, my friends and family have commented that I sleep in the “tundra” with multiple fans and the thermostat as low as the dorm room lets me go. For me, it’s just more comfortable, and my roommate has accepted it and thankfully loves wearing sweatpants and sweatshirts at night.
There are times when yes, I am cold but I don’t see it as a problem, I simply put on a hoodie and I’m fine, it’s an easy fix. Personally, I thrive in the winter, with boots and sweaters as my staple clothing, the holidays and snow, it’s hard to find something I don’t like about the colder months.
Oftentimes I find myself with a group of people walking outside while it is mid-January and every couple of seconds they begin to comment about how much they hate this weather, and “never want to leave my room again”. When in my mind I enjoy the crisper air, and wouldn’t mind taking the long way to get to class.
Every now and then though, I do run into someone who also enjoys the frigid winters and sleeps in tundra-like conditions and we have this instant connection that no one else quite understands.
There’s a sense of comradery that knows how great the cold is, and I don’t always feel as though I’m from another planet. However, these people are hard to find, so when I do meet someone with the same internal thermostat I quickly ask them to back me up to my friends who can’t get behind it.
So, to the people reading this who like the colder weather, I’m with you. I understand how hard it can be to convince your friends to turn on the AC January, and not being able to sleep in a heavy comforter because they get too hot.
It’s okay, we know that for about three or four months of the year we get to experience our favorite season and there’s nothing better than putting on a sweater and watching the snow come down.
