A Letter To Those Who Change Their Minds

It's OK to change your mind—in fact, it's the best thing you can do.

They say people change, but what they don’t tell you is that people change constantly. I changed my career path 20 different times in high school, from enlisting in the military, to going to a big college, to wanting to just give up. You are allowed to change, and don’t let people tell you that you can’t. If you want to be an astronaut one day, and then a coffee maker the next, you can. That’s the beauty of life. When you let people try to tell you to make a decision and stick to it, you are not giving yourself the chance to grow. However, here is what you should do:

Build yourself a support group. Surround yourself with friends who don’t care about where you are going in life, but only that your journey is safe and filled with happiness.

Change your mind, Sit down and write out a life plan, then write another one, and another, and another. Tell yourself that there are a million things you can do with your life. There are a million things left for you to experience. No personality test or online quiz can tell you what to do with your life, only you can.

Find some stability—find an aspect of your life that you can control with complete confidence. Whether it’s what you watch for TV every night or on what day you pay your bills, and do it. Having something in your life that you control and do every day will help you feel some sort of balance.

Be happy with the person you are right now. Building self-esteem is not only critical, but it is the single most important thing you will do with your life. Without it you will feel lost. Learning to love yourself can be hard. It can be agonizing, but the consequences are worse if you don’t. Write out a list of things you like about yourself, and every time your self-esteem feels low, look at it. This will help to remind you that you love the way you do your eyeliner in the morning, you love the way you make macaroni and cheese and you love the way your hair looks in a pony tail. Love everything about you.

Changing your mind can be a great thing. I wish that I had changed my mind more often. There are a million things I still want to do, and I change my mind about them every single day. I wish I had more than one life so that I could live the 10 different paths I have changed my mind from. But in the end, you only have one. If you go your life without changing your mind, you have let yourself become bland, you have let yourself become stuck. Do not let people tell you that you cannot change your mind. It is your life, and if you don’t live it the way you want, and live it the way you choose, then are you really living your own life at all?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
