'Those Who Can’t Do, Teach' - Why I Can't Stand This Statement

We teach confidence and how to stand tall, how to make friends and solve problems. All of the building blocks for the real world.

“Those who can't do, teach."

You would be surprised about how many times I have heard this ignorant statement being made, whether directly at me or in passing. Whenever I explain to someone that I am going to school to be an early childhood teacher, I often get this look of, "Oh, just that?" That is usually followed by a disapproving facial expression.

Not only does this not make any sense, but it is disheartening to the people who are putting in their time and hearts into earning a degree in education.

So, let's battle this statement.

Why is it even being said?

Well, like every profession, there are, of course, the outliers that are there merely for a paycheck and nothing more. There are people who are earning a degree in teaching because it does not require you to learn insane calculations, so they follow the stereotypes of chalking teaching up to be easy.

(Pun intended.)

For those people, I understand why this was even being said in the first place. However, if we based everything off the few percent, that would be a pretty upsetting life.

Many of us who are going to school to be a teacher actually love and cherish children, and we only want to provide the future of America with intelligence because that is the key to freedom and happiness.

You see, when a college student becomes engulfed in the studies of education, those classes that everyone calls easy become more and more difficult. Not because the material is challenging, but you love what you're learning so much that the more effort and time you put in, the more you will grow as an educator.

So, you do it. You put your all into every assignment.

As teachers, we are in charge of not only teaching your children their ABCs and 123s but also teaching them compassion, kindness, and how to be the best version of themselves. We teach confidence and how to stand tall, how to make friends and solve problems. All of the building blocks for the real world.

Without our teachers, we would not be able to function in the real world.

So, before you judge someone on picking education as a career choice, take a harder look at yourself and our future.

It takes a big heart to shape little minds... and lots and lots of patience.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
