To Those Who Don't Understand Anxiety

Unless you have anxiety yourself, you don't have the slightest clue what being anxious is really like.

To those who don't understand anxiety,

Anxiety sucks. Unless you suffer from an anxiety disorder yourself, you don't have the slightest clue about anxiety and how it affects those diagnosed. Anxiety is like a little monster in your head that keeps telling you that everything is wrong. It keeps feeding you bad and negative thoughts until you are consumed by them.

One of the worst parts about anxiety is that we know that the anxieties and fears we are feeling and thinking are totally and utterly irrational. We know the little monster feeding us negative thoughts is wrong, but we can not control the monster. Knowing the thoughts we are thinking are totally irrational and crazy makes everything one hundred times worse.

When people tell us to stop being anxious, it makes us even more anxious. Don't people realize that if anxiety sufferers had the opportunity to just stop being anxious we would in a heart beat? Don't they realize that by telling us that we are crazy that they are just feeding into the monster inside our head?

Some think that people who are diagnosed with anxiety don't actually have anxiety and are just drama queens/kings looking for attention. The only way the people who think we are doing this for attention would learn first hand that we are NOT attention seekers would be to have them experience some of our anxious thoughts or a panic attack. Even if someone doesn't believe that my anxiety is REAL, I would not wish my anxiety or a panic attack upon them.

If there are two things to take away from this article, let it be this:

Do not tell an anxious person that their anxious thoughts are crazy. Chances are, they already know that and were looking for someone to disprove the monster feeding the anxious thoughts to them.

And

Do not tell an anxious person to stop being anxious. By saying this, you will increase their anxiety and make them feel even worse about themselves. Instead, offer an ear. Let them know that the thoughts they are thinking are not true. Let them express their anxieties to you without you judging them.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
