I was driving home from dropping my sister off from school early one morning when a song started playing that I had never heard before. The screen read Marry Me by Thomas Rhett. I haven't been disappointed with any of his music before, so I turned it up and listened to the words.
The song starts off with a soft, sweet tune where he sings about a girl's dream wedding. Magnolias, out in the country, not too many people, and her dad preaching the service. Here I am thinking it was a beautiful tribute to his wife before their wedding until one line changes the whole story line of the song;
"She wants to get married, but she don't wanna marry me."
I sat there confused for a second until I listening to the rest of the song where it talks about Thomas and this girl being friends '"for forever." He had spent his entire life wondering if she felt the same way until "he got the invite, and I (he) knew it was too late."
And then there's the line that just breaks the heart,
"I know her daddy's been dreading this day, but he don't know he's the only one giving her away"
He had waited too long to tell her how he really felt and she went on to find someone else. He wanted to tell her but then realized it wasn't worth ruining her day, so he just wished her the best and left.
After thinking about the song and looking into it, I realized it was written in his perspective if he had never told his wife, Lauren, how he really felt about her. *Crying*
In an interview Thomas Rhett said, "It's completely the opposite of a love song. This song, although it doesn't pertain to my life today, it definitely easily could have been that if I had never gone up to Lauren and told her how I felt about her for so long..."
Any girl, country fan or not, should try to get through this song without their heart breaking. I doubt you will.
