This Thing Called Love...

Love is a tricky thing, but it demands to be felt.

The thing I’ve learned about love in my 20 years of experience is that has a million different forms. It can make you happy and sad and angry and pissed and make you want to hate it. It consumes you when you have no control over it. It ruins your life and makes all your choices be about it. Love can be the root of all evils. But don’t get me wrong, love can be the most amazing thing to have ever existed. Sometimes I wonder what happened for the first person to feel “love” and how it affected them. Love, is love.

Now love isn’t the same for everyone.

Love can be the remade coffee in the morning or the kiss when walking out the door. It can be the smell of rain hitting the pavement or the way a flower blooms in the sunlight. Love is different with everybody. No love is the same love. Its unique and special and hard to come by.

There's puppy dog love, honeymoon phase love, and then there’s the hardcore love. The type of love that makes your knees weak when you look at someone and makes your body feel ten times hotter as the blood rushes through you. Now that is a special kind of love.

When you look at someone you love, you see one of two things. Someone who is going to be there when you need them and then someone who wants to be there when you need them. Either may not be your choice, but you know when you get a different feeling. A feeling that when you look in their eyes, you see a life. A life with them and no one else. A life filled with laughter and happiness that is so genuine that you only see it in the movies. It’s a feeling that you get when you know that this is the person you would share your everything with.

Love is such a crazy thing that sometimes, it gets lost and it's impossible to imagine losing. To love someone beyond feeling and then for it to just vanish, it’s what makes love hated. To feel heartbreak makes you never want to find love again because the pain that comes with it is overwhelming.

I have learned through my encounters of heartbreak that there is more to love than meets the eye. Once you put yourself first and know exactly what you deserve in life and how to be treated by someone else, then loving someone becomes easy. You will go through people who will not want to but the time and effort to know who you are, but once you do find the someone, that someone who never stops to remind you of how much you mean to them and the smile on their face when they see you is evidence of that real type of love, all the heartbreak becomes worth it.

Love isn’t something that just happens, it's something that is shared with two people who know in their hearts that this is what was supposed to happen. Love is strong and conquering and willing to bend and break for the sake of being that full, whole, enduring love again.

Let yourself find the love you truly deserve and you’ll never have to deal with heartbreak again.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
