This One Time, At Band Camp...

I had the best time of my life

This One Time, At Band Camp...

Being in a band may get you labeled as a "band geek" but I can vouch that you get some of the best memories in a band setting. Countess hours at camps, rehearsals, and competitions mean lots of downtime. Here are some things I think every "band geek" will understand.

1. Your feet will always be ghostly pale compared to your rockin’ leg tan.

2. Holy calves, Batman!

3. …wait, was that my dot or your dot?

4. Being right guide was a huge deal.

There's nothing more prideful than seeing and being a part of these beautiful straight lines.

5. Colorguard may or may not take pride in how many people they hit in a parade.

I’m sorry but they were in my way!

6. If there is a beat to be heard while walking, your feet will be walking in time to the music.

Walking in a mall is difficult with all the stores playing their own music...

7. You constantly walk in step with your friends.

This isn’t on purpose, it just happens…

8. What, my part isn’t the melody?

I guess the director said "Play LIKE your part is the melody" not "Your part IS the melody." Oops.

9. “Okay band, sing your parts" brings out the inner performer of everyone.

Good or bad, it is always entertaining. Even the guard will sing swoosh swooshity swish, toss catch slam!

10. This song actually has words to it?

Instrumentals are life and every piece presented that you don't already know is assumed to be an instrumental.

11. Band people are your favorite people.

We may not always have it together, but together we have it all. I have had the honor of being involved in the Missouri Lion's All-State Band for the past 6 years now and would not trade that experience for anything! The strangers you meet during those two weeks leave you as family at the end of the camp. If you have a chance to be involved with your state's Lion's band I would suggest you do it. My favorite band memories were formed there.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Whether you're commuting or dorming, your first year of college is a huge adjustment. The transition from living with parents to being on my own was an experience I couldn't have even imagined- both a good and a bad thing. Here's a personal archive of a few of the things I learned after going away for the first time.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
