This Is Not Equality

Is the current feminism movement working towards a sexual revolution or equality?

Feminism and women’s rights are again in the news this week with the repeal and replacing of Obamacare being voted on. So lets’s talk about feminism. Here’s the deal: today’s feminism movement is more of a liberating sexual awakening than protecting the equal rights of both sexes.

Men and women want what they want, when they want it. Feminists are not fighting for equal protection under the law, they are fighting for women and men to have sex when they want to, with who they want to and not pay the consequences of these actions.

A clear example of this is the hate and backlash Ivanka Trump has received during her time as an unpaid, unofficial member of the White House staff. Ivanka is working to negotiate deals that would better women across the country and do feminists get on board and celebrate her? No. They don’t care that she is an ambassador for women to have a voice in the White House because of her maiden name. And who cares that Ivanka is a picture-perfect example of what the modern woman should be? She takes care of her family, herself and she works hard towards goals that are beyond herself. So while feminists are screaming in the streets, glorifying Lena Dunham, I’ll be raising a glass to Ivanka.

Speaking of Dunham, Vogue ran a video last month as a part of their 73 Questions series, which fired out 73 questions at Lena as she strut around her house. One of the last questions asked Dunham what she thinks the biggest issue facing our country is today.

“That some of Americans don’t believe other Americans are real humans,” said Dunham.

That’s an interesting response coming from someone who loudly supports abortion and that, somehow, a sack of cells magically becomes a human being with rights as they exit the birth canal.

Then when asked what she would ask Donald Trump if he called her, Dunham tossed in an interesting idea about Ivanka.

“I would ask him whether he wanted all women to be treated with the same respect that he believes his daughter should be treated with,” said Dunham.

I would say he does, and that is why he has placed her next to influential international leaders like the Japanese Prime Minister and Germanys Chancellor, Angela Merkel.

The Chicago Tribune called Ivanka's engagement with international leaders 'unethical'.

Matt McDermott, a political commentator, tweeted out that Ivanka Trump as no reason to be sitting next to Merkel in an international meeting. Why, Matt? Because Ivanka had a clothing line so that makes her unfit to engage in conversation with another human? Some of these left wing feminists are more sexist than the people they are trying to engage in conversation with.

So let’s talk about some feminist icons. Recently, Kylie Jenner has been dubbed a feminist leader because she joined the Free the Nipple campaign.

"I do consider myself a feminist, I'm a young woman, for one thing, and I don't depend on a man or anybody else. I make my own money and start my own businesses, and I feel like I'm an inspiration for a lot of young girls who want to stand on their own," said Jenner to Glamour Magazine.

Yes, because feminism is the movement not whereas genders are equal, but according to Jenner, feminists are female and they don't depend on others. What Jenner doesn't understand is that she does depend on others, specifically the culture that devours anything with her name on it.

But, because she's from the Kardashian empire, she's pro-sexual liberation and she fits the liberal agenda, left-wing publications are quicker to dub her a feminist before they name Ivanka Trump, Conway, Betsy Devos or any Republican woman.

Magazines know that sex sells. And while society crowns girls like Jenner a champion of equality of the sexes because they are shameless about sex and they pose naked, the same group of people have shamed our First Lady for doing the same thing decades ago. Fascinating.

A feminist hero coming from Columbus, Ohio, was recently reported on by Cosmo. The sex-tips magazine recently ran a story about a woman who made birth contraceptives into a “sexy, contraceptive-themes burlesque” costume and readers are loving it. The story is at the top of the website splash page, it’s trending and feminists are dubbing this the support that feminism needs. But the same readers are furious over the comment about mammograms Senator Pat Roberts made on Twitter. When asked if he supports ending Essential Health Benefits, Senator Roberts said “I wouldn’t want to lose my mammograms,” Apparently, dancing erotically in birth contraceptive is respected and making a comment about mammograms is a sin. There is such a double standard here.

Also, the same website has an article titled “Shirtless Guys Holding Puppies are Always a Good Idea.” This really validates the magazines serious political voice.

These are just a few recent examples of how the feminist movement as a whole does not care about equal legal rights, but they want to have total freedom when it comes to sex. Where are they marching for that girl who was raped by two illegal immigrants in a school bathroom? What are they doing for the millions of men, women and children who are sold into the sex slave industry? What about the millions of homeless in the United States, the majority of them are women and children? How are the same feminists that sit in the streets and scream at the sky because of Donald Trump engaging the political system to be equal for both genders?

Plus, if you are in the opinion that there are more than two genders then you have to work harder than any other feminist on the planet, because they are only fighting for two while you have to equalize four, or nine or hundreds of gender identities.

So no, I do not think feminism is fighting for rights, I think it’s fighting for sex.

Our culture has this need to sexualize women, no matter how smart they are, no matter what they are doing, women are always portrayed as overtly sexual beings. The media has highlighted the fact that society is intimidated by women in power, and to combat that insecurity, they label them as stupid or sexually promiscuous.

How the media and American culture has recently treated Kellyanne Conway is absolutely despicable.

On March 1, Democratic Representative Cedric Richmond implied a sexual innuendo towards pictures of Conway on her knees in the Oval Office. That is disgusting. If left wing feminists actually believed that everyone has rights and should be treated equally, they would be outraged at this. Let me be clear: a man implied sexual meaning towards a smart, powerful woman’s posture in the most powerful office in the world because he does not agree with her and/or feels inferior to her.

The left does not give Conway any credit. Because she does not fit their agenda, because she doesn’t conform to their standards, they have denied her the credit she so well deserves.

And now to address the SNL skits. SNL is the biggest hypocrite when it comes to women’s rights; they champion other women and use their sexuality as a tool to empower. But, they use sexuality to discredit Conway, they slut shame Kellyanne Conway and make her a sexual character on their show to portray her as unintelligent.

Does this not sound like a double standard? Beyonce’s sexuality makes her powerful, Conway’s makes her unfit for her job. Lena Dunham’s quirky sexual nature is praised, while Conway is portrayed as a psychopathic, unhinged sexual lunatic.

So why are the women on the left strong sexy and girls on the right are sexy and stupid? It doesn’t make sense.

The double-standard here is terrifying, especially for me as I try to step into leadership positions as a conservative woman. Will my life’s work be boiled down to a photo with a sexist caption?

Let’s allow the women in leadership lead and leave the sex symbols out of it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
