I’m just going to be honest here: Truett is WEIRD. Can I get an amen? (You’re supposed to laugh there). Okay guys, but really, Truett is weird, yet somehow that’s part of its charm.
Besides the overwhelming weirdness of Truett-McConnell University, it is a place that makes everyone feel like they’re at home. That’s why people feel comfortable being their weird selves! That’s why freshmen start poppin’ dance moves in front of large crowds of people after being here for only a day. Speaking of freshmen, if you have started to date someone during your first month of being here, people are going to stare out their windows as you walk in three minutes before curfew so get over it or come back earlier.
So let’s talk about some cool things going on here at Truett. Becoming a university is pretty cool, and so is the fountain when it is lit up at night but… Like, am I the only one who thinks taking a swim in our new fountain is unsanitary (and weird of course)? Then there’s the Hoedown, which is super fun if you’re into square dancing and corn. We can’t forget the ice cream social during Freshmen Orientation where you meet new people and flirt with strangers. Yep, that’s Truett. In the spring last year, we all got free TMU t-shirts – super awesome – but literally everyone wore them to the Spring Fling later that day. CHILL PEOPLE.
You learn that if you go to Wal-Mart then you’ll see at least two other people from Truett there. It’s the only place to go in Cleveland besides Starbucks, and you’ll definitely see people there too. If anything happens on campus then everyone knows about it within three hours or less – usually less. The drama is equivalent to the petty drama in high school. Everyone knows everyone else’s business, especially in New Dorm where the Wi-Fi rocks and the walls are basically sound proof. Thankfully we all have beautiful voices, thanks to James Dollar giving hand motions in chapel for how high or low we should hit a note.
Without a doubt, Truett has become a home to me. From the first time I visited, I knew I felt at home here. Don’t get me wrong, I meant what I said about Truett being weird. That’s a fact, and if anyone tries to tell you that’s not true then they’re probably weird. I’m kidding, but let’s just be honest, people. Everyone is super friendly and welcoming, which made the transition from home so much easier. Without the super outgoing people, we wouldn’t have any entertainment because look around; we are in the middle of nowhere.
The Hoedown is one of my favorite things that we all attend as well as the Spring Fling that Truett does. It’s really awesome and I’m very thankful for it. I’m also thankful that we actually have a Wal-Mart because then we would either have to grocery shop at Ingles or drive 30 minutes to Kroger.
Yes, the drama is annoying and people being all up in your business is immature but – no that’s all I have to stay. Stop with the nosiness. Compared to Otwell, New Dorm is luxurious. I have some very fond memories of Otwell and I am glad I experienced living there, but my room this year is so cozy and homey and spacious and I have my own shower (that I share with 3 other girls but it’s actually in our room and not down the hall) and it’s just great. Worship every week in chapel is also great. Everyone who gets up there does a phenomenal job.
I’m so thankful that Truett found me. I have friendships that will last a lifetime and memories that I will cherish forever. It’s the people who I thought were weird or snobby or too country who became my best friends here. If Truett hasn’t changed you yet, then it will. Truett is a lot of things, but the most important thing it can be is home.
