This Is Going To Be Great

It is about way more than just the Insta photo ops.

This Is Going To Be Great
Julia Simpkins

A lot of people have been writing about joining a sorority because it is just that time of year. So I have decided to jump on the bandwagon and give my input since we all might be saying the same thing in the end, we all have different perspectives of it.

The biggest thing I have noticed is that people have so many different ideas of what being in a sorority is like. And as a newly pledged member of a sorority is that I can already tell it is going to be one of the greatest adventures. I have only been apart of my sorority for about a week now and I have already formed one of a kind friendships that I already cherish. It is because of these already amazing friendships that make me look forward to not just this year, but all the years to come while I am still in college and even after.

A sorority is just not about the friendships you make, because although they are great there are also so many other amazing things that I look forward to. The biggest thing other then friendships that I look forward to, is the community involvement. Ever since I was little my mom had me involved in Girl Scouts, and she would not let me quit so I was a Girl Scout until the day I graduated high school. But I was also apart of my high school dance team where we were very involved with the community. Now that I am in college and not doing either of those things, I realize how much I appreciated to be involved with the community around me. Just yesterday my sorority put on slip n slide kickball in the quad, although I couldn’t go it is the things like this that make me look forward to the next years of being apart of such an amazing program.

Not only is the community involvement something that I look forward too, but it is a new family. For Labor Day weekend I made the five hour drive home, and although it was an easy drive I just got bored by myself. I hope to go home again in a few weeks to surprise my dad, and although I am super excited , I don’t want to drive by myself. It is because of these new friendships that I have formed that by the time I go home again I know I can ask one of my sorority sisters if they want to go with me. Plus, I would get to show them where I am from. Because out here in Kansas although I love it, I have realized how much I love my home in Golden, Colorado.

So just to clear the air, I did not join a sorority for all of the cute Instagram picture ops. Or all the t-shirts and chances to dress up. Although I am so excited for all the events to come this year. I joined a sorority for the everlasting bond I will have with these girls, and I joined Alpha Gamma Delta because I believe in their purpose. Therefore, I will live with a purpose.

Sorority

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
