This Is As Good As It Gets For Some People

What are you doing in this life, to make the next life a better one?

This Is As Good As It Gets For Some People

This is as good as it gets for some people.
Late night partying or living in a big fancy house
Wearing expensive power suits accessorized with huge millstones around their necks
You can’t buy your way to redemption, so unfortunately this is as good as it gets for some people.
Scary thought: this life will be the best life some people live
Hopeful thought: this will be the worst life some people live
Because when we take our last breath it doesn’t stop there
I’m not a betting person but if I were and my belief of what life is like after this is right, you have a lot to lose
If your belief of what life is like after this is right, I have nothing to lose because you’re betting on nothing after this
I hope we all make it but that’s a dream and I wake up to reality every time I turn on the tv
That dream is deferred every time they persecute his name
This is as good as it gets for some people
I have The Good News for people but some people are so trapped in this life they don’t bother thinking about the next
Some people are so trapped in hanging onto bad news that the thought of there being Good News is utterly repulsive
So this is as a good as it gets for some people
This short time on Earth may be the best thing they know
I hope we all make it
But that dream is shattered every time
I open my eyes and see the world for what it is: a power hungry state
The King has the ultimate power but the Lord of the Flies has some too
Constantly flapping his wings, drawing in as many maggots to the dung pile with him
This is as good as it gets for some people
This thought woke me up out my slumber and echoed in my ears
This thought may wake others up as well
It may lay with them in bed as they try to depart from this tormenting thought for eight hours
It may tailgate their mind as they sit in bumper to bumper traffic
It may pop up in their head as they type away their day from nine to five
How could it not? A hard pill to swallow that what you’re doing now is setting you up to be living your worst life after this
It doesn’t have to be this way though
I hope my life is pointing you in the direction of the cross
I hope my life is guiding you to eternity
Because when my life is over, that’s where I’ll be. Living my best life forever.

"O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." - I Corinthians 15:55-57

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
