You may know it by many names, but have you ever wondered exactly how you pronounce it? Guy-roll? Ga-hero? Ga-heero?
Well, if you've ever participated in this debate you aren't alone mainly because no one can actually tell how this is pronounced. In fact Jimmy Fallon has already addressed this issue by creating a hilarious skit, personally, I have always called it a gy-row and many other individuals have pronounced it the same way. However I know people who pronounce it euro, gee-ro, or yee-ro, so am I wrong? Well, pronunciation may depend on an individuals region and maybe the only way is to ask someone who is Greek since it's believed to originate in Greece.
So is there actually a "correct way" to pronounce this? The answer is; yes there is! Finally, Jimmy Fallon and Luke Bryan find the solution. So what is the correct way? Believe it or not, it's pronounced YEE-RO!
I know the HUGE question most of you would ask is why is this relevant? or why does this matter? It matters because Americans trying to pronounce it in the Greek manner sound just as stupid as when they over pronounce any foreign food item in restaurants. All in all, it's just another imported word that really relies on context and you can really call it however you would like. At the end of the day its everyone's love of food that is important.
