Feminist: A person who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.
Any Beyonce fans reading this have probably heard this quote that was actually sampled from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's speech on feminism. And this is all it is. No more reading between the lines, no more saying that feminism is "too aggressive."
Do all feminists go out on the streets and participate in nude protests? Do all feminists speak up and fight for eliminating the wage gap? Do all feminists support Planned Parenthood? Do all feminists think that rape culture is real? Do all feminists feel the need to fight to be able to breastfeed in public? No, and they shouldn't have to. That's the point of feminism.
But what if you don't take part any of the awesome (but bold) stereotypical "feminist" actions? What if you don't feel like you "speak up"? Can you still call yourself a feminist? Absolutely.
Why? Everyday feminism. And that means the little day-to-day things you can do to make a difference, like helping a woman to understand how valuable her voice is and how important her vote is. Doing things like shopping at businesses where women are part of the management, supporting women who are struggling, bringing awareness to family violence, and stopping yourself and others from gossiping. (Ladies, this is a big one for us!)
Not all feminists are angry at men. And why should we be? The need for feminism is caused by a systemic issue that completely permeates our culture, and we can't blame that on men in our lives. However, we can all try to be better. Do the men in your life understand that they can be feminists too? What can they do?
• Understand intersectional feminism.
• Address women's issues with other men. While also...
• Taking a step back, being quiet, and listening to women on issues that are directly related to women's experiences or bodies.
• Adopt the label of a feminist.
• When talking about feminism, don't put men's issues first.
• Vote, support Planned Parenthood, etc.
So with all of this in mind, why should you not only call yourself a feminist, but try to bring awareness to women's issues with everyday feminism?
• Do it for the girl who was raped by a male classmate. Brock Turner was later only sentenced to six months in county jail.
• For the girls in Cambodia and Pakistan who will be targeted by extreme violence and hate when trying to get a basic education.
• For the 38,461 girls and women being forced into marriages against their will every day.
• For women and girls, who are all victims of major and minor oppression every single day.
