Life After All

It's been a long road. Its been a tough election season, physically, mentally, emotionally. America, or rather, the Electoral College system has spoken and chosen Donald Trump as the 45th President. Americans actually choose Hillary Clinton by around 200,000 more votes. But what happened has already happened. It's done. So the question is, what to do now?

To all those people who are considering moving to Canada, don't. They will not take you for the simple reason they prefer to help Syrian refugees rather than disillusioned Americans. The same can be said of much of Europe. Angela Merkel actually said that Donald Trump getting elected is not a good thing and that we are going into a period of uncertainty. The Dow Jones certainly reflected this as it fell by 750 points, and Asian markets fell by about 5% on average. Trump has just gotten elected and he is already about to cause a recession. This is probably not going to happen, as markets will stabilize over the week. However, it does say a lot about the trust our own capitalistic system has in the person we just elected to lead it.

Dubai and it's surrounding areas might seem like a good place to move. However, they are all Muslim-majority areas which possibly hate Trump for spreading Islamophobia more than Mexico hates him for his anti-Hispanic rhetoric. Talking about Hispanics, Latin America is also off the table. Australia and New Zealand might be good options along with the Far East. However, they have more restrictive policies about immigration than Trump ever proposed. Unless you have a few million lying around that is.

So where does that leave us? Antarctica. There is no one there to complain about Americans doing stupid things and screwing everyone's lives up. It is a bit cold there, so anyone going might have to pack warm.

Another thing we need to understand that Orange Is really the new Black. I heard a while ago that a town in Alaska elected a cat as their mayor. Well, as a country we just elected a pumpkin as our President. I understand that we all miss Pumpkin Spice Latte, but maybe putting a Pumpkin into the White House was a step too far. And a sexist, misogynist, racist one? That's just overkill.

All jokes aside, we need to realize that he did get elected. He is going to be the President. And while during Obama's presidency, Republicans failed to respect the office, we should not do the same. We should hope that the moderates that surround him can ensure that the damage is not lasting. To ensure that the spirit of nativism that has reared it's ugly head does not last long. Because we all know that Trump has made a lot of promises that are impossible to deliver on. Al we can do it wait, and be ready for the mid-terms.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
