A disaster, that can be considered on the worst nuclear disasters in human history, had occurred in 1986 in now Northern Ukraine that led to the leaking of radioactive material. A giant shield has been designed to protect the nuclear reactor that was damaged 30 years ago at Chernobyl has been completed and has been completed and set into place recently to prevent the spread of radioactivity.
It took 19 years of planning and 5 years to build. The dome also had to be moved 327 meters away from its assembly point to cover reactor number four, which exploded in 1986.
This image shows Chernobyl 30 years later.
The Chernobyl shield is a first for modern engineering. According to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) the shield is the largest moveable, land-based structure ever built. The arch-shaped steel structure had to be assembled nearby and moved more than 1,000 feet into position by using a special skidding system of hydraulic jacks.
