Poetry On Odyssey: This Can Not Be Just "Another"

The time is NOW.

Why.

The one little word that puzzles me.

The one little word that irks me, because there is simply no answer.

There is simply no answer for the reason behind the Las Vegas shooting on Sunday.

There is simply no answer for why millennials know a whole new meaning behind the word “another.”

There is simply no answer as to why this nation is divided anymore, especially at a time like this.

My lifetime has only consisted of 6883 days thus far.

Days filled with happiness, when my parents finally got me a unicorn Webkinz for Christmas.

Days filled with sadness, when my cat Leo passed away.

Days filled with anger, when someone finished the last chocolate chip cookie.

Then, there are days filled with fear.

Why.

Tell me why I can never focus on just watching a movie when I am in a movie theater.

Tell me why I can never focus on just classwork when I am in school.

Tell me why I can never focus on my terrible dance moves when I am in a club.

Tell me why I can never focus on the music when I am at a concert.

Tell me why the names "Dark Knight Rises", Sandy Hook, Orlando and now Las Vegas have a whole new meaning to them.

Tell me why Las Vegas is being used with the word “another” in the same sentence.

This is not just another tragedy.

This is not just another day where innocent lives were lost.

This can not be just another situation where nothing is done.

We are not Democrats.

We are not Republicans.

We are simply Americans.

In the face of tragedy we can not afford to lose sight of that.

We can not be distracted by the need to make political gains,

But rather make gains of progress towards a solution.

We can not be distracted by which party said what and how they said it,

But rather focus on what each party wishes to accomplish.

From there, that is where we will find our common ground.

We does not mean just as Republicans, nor does it mean just as Democrats

We means being united.

As a united nation, this is where we will come to our solution.

Speaking in terms of a math equation, this solution does not call for division, instead, it calls for multiplication.

If I learned anything from my kindergarten math class, multiplication is where you take two separate integers and combine them to end with ONE product.

But if I learned one thing my from U.S. History class it would be that most problems in Congress go unresolved for a long time.

Until something drastic occurs.

Tell me why we wait until something happens.

When will it be enough?

Enough debates.

Enough of using the word “another”.

Enough innocent lives lost.

The time was June 20, 2012.

The time was December 14, 2012.

The time was June 12, 2016.

The new date is October 1, 2017, and the time is NOW.

From this day forward another should not be in our vocabulary.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
