This topic is trending and I have finally put my thoughts together on the show that everyone has been talking about, 13 Reasons Why.
For those of you who do not know, this is a series based off a book about a girl who committed suicide. She records herself telling the “reasons” she committed suicide, but those reasons were her peers at school and the actions of those classmates.
I watched this show, frankly, because I am an adult and I wanted to be able to form my own opinions on this topic. Every time I get on social media, and mainly Facebook due to the number of parents, I saw adults tearing this show to shreds. I was conflicted. This show seemed to have a good message, so how could this be so good and so bad at the same time?
Let me be very clear, I do not think a child needs to see this show. This series is graphic and difficult to watch even for me. I could not imagine what that would do to a preteens mind. With that being said, all the parents stopping their middle schoolers from binging the latest fad, you’re doing the right things.
However, I need to bring something else to your attention. I am not a parent and I have done no research on this matter. All that I do know is that suicide happens and that it happens in your kids’ schools. It happened in my high school, and I am not going to pretend that it didn’t. I want to urge parents to do one thing, do not ignore it.
This show is dangerous for this generation. It turned something terrible and tragic into entertainment for most viewers. What’s even more terrible and tragic is that this is a real problem in our society.
I know what you want to do, and that’s to tell your child they can’t watch the show because it “glorifies” suicide. Suicide does not need to be glorified, but it needs to be brought out of the darkness it is in. What do we have to do to fix this problem instead of ignoring it?
I have seen so many adults say that they won’t let their child watch the show, but that should not be the end to this. Your child is going to hear about this show from friends, and we can’t pretend that this isn’t an issue.
The show is an issue, yes, but please remember that this isn’t going to go away if your kid doesn’t see it with their own eyes. Tell your child why they can’t watch it. Tell them there are better answers than the characters in this show came up with. Tell them that they can talk to you if they need you.
Suicide does not need a series to be glorified, it’s already there. This show has just simply turned it into entertainment. It scares us because it’s in our face. It’s frightening because this issue isn’t concealed anymore. Please don’t ignore it.
