Yes I have watched the show. Yes I thought it was very well produced and had very good meaning. Yes I walked away with a lesson learned. Yes I cried and hurt. Yes I remembered some very personal things. But what needs to be brought up is the realness of the show. The reactions some are having are not the greatest. The meaning in this is beyond any imaginable description.
- Suicide is real. Suicide really effects people. It is not a joke, it is not to be taken lightly. It hurts more people than you may think. I myself suffer daily as I lost one of the closest people to me to suicide. I also suffer personally. Suicide isn't easy. Suicide is serious.
- Suicide does not mean the person who took their life was weak. It does not make them a bad person. They may have been struggling but they were not weak.
- Mental illness is important. Mental illness is draining. It is a monster. It takes over you. Mental illness has become very common in our time and it needs to be acknowledged.
- Self harm is an actual struggle. Do not shame someone for it. Be there for them. Self harm is painful. It is an active way of trying to suppress a deeper pain.
- Stand up for what you believe. Don't be the bully. Stop the bully. But you need to also realize you aren't a superhero, and you cannot save everyone. It is not your fault. Don't beat yourself up.
- The stuff seen on the show is not just made up. Things like rape, bullying, child abuse, drug abuse, domestic abuse, self harm, suicide happen regularly and the show should be used to help us see the reality of these things and how they effect people. The show should be used for people to get help.
- The feelings provoked from that show will vary. Know that your feelings are valid whatever they may be. Have respect, though, for those around you. You never know who is truly suffering. Respect the subject of suicide.
- The show is not your "promposal" nothing about this show is cute. It's intense, yes there is no denying that but it is not cute. Suicide is not cute. It is a show talking about something so serious but is taken so lightly.
- Though there is a "plot" for a season two you should not anticipate it. That show was painful and truthful. And with there is not much more to be said. The show was to tell the story of the life and death of Hannah Baker. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s not meant to be a show with a happy ending.
- Be sure you reach out for help, whether it is for you or for someone else. Reaching out does not make you weak, nor should someone look down on you for that. You are being a strong person for taking a step towards help.
- Reflect. Realize. Remember. The show withheld a lot, but take it in. Feel it. Feel the pain and do something with it. Make a better tomorrow for everyone.
- Know your worth and know you’re loved. Know someone cares. Know someone finds joy in your existence. Know someone is looking out for you. Know someone has faith in you.
- Be there. Always be there for people. Always be there for yourself as well. A simple smile can change a day.
