10 Things You Should Know Before Adopting A German Shepherd

Whether you already have a german shepherd and are looking for a few laughs, or if you are considering adopting your very own german shepherd this article is for you. It will give you all the insights of what it's like to be a true german shepherd owner. From their sizes, fur, personalities, and everything in-between I'm sure this list will help you make the right choice!

1. The puppy stage is cute, while it lasts

It's easy to get overwhelmed with cuteness when looking at these beautiful creatures, but be warned they don't stay this small for long. Within just a few months these puppies sprout up and can easily reach up to 90 pounds. For some, this may be a red flag. If you don't have a large yard or the time to take your shepherd to the park for a run this breed probably isn't right for you.

2. Be prepared for large ears

Of course, if you're looking into adopting a shepherd you already know about the ears. But, do you know that because they're so big and open they need to be cleaned often? My two dogs both have very intense ear allergies which require some deep cleaning which isn't always pleasant. I mean would you like someone pushing their fingers in your ear?

3. They eat--a lot

Big dog, big appetite. These dogs can eat, and eat, and eat and eat. Dog food, especially a respected and healthy brand is not always a cheap deal. Dog food can easily range anywhere from $38 dollars a bag to over $60. If you aren't prepared to spend that kind of money regularly, you should probably look for a smaller animal.

4. They're more protective than most other dogs

So you've decided the size doesn't scare you, and the food consumption isn't an issue, but now what about those personalities? German shepherds are extremely loyal to the entire family who adopts them, but they know who they truly belong to. My family has two shepherds one who was originally adopted for myself and one for my Mom, and you can without a doubt tell that they know who they belong to. My shepherd will make it clear to any stranger that he will do anything for me, and most certainly scopes out any dangerous situation before letting me move forward. They will stand by your side through any situation even if it's threatening to themselves.

5. They will shed a lot

These dogs have huge coats which shed a lot, especially in the changing seasons. They need baths and to be brushed often. Dog hair will most definitely be a part of your everyday life. You will find it on your clothes, your floor, your bed, in your food, and just about anywhere else you can imagine. If you can't stand the thought of that, these dogs probably aren't for you.

6. They're very talkative

German shepherds do not stop talking. They will moan and growl to wake you up in the morning, they will bark at the mailman every single day, they will bark at the birds flying by, and the bunnies running across the lawn. Most importantly they love treats, and they will let you know when they want one with their voices. You quickly learn to distinguish between their barks whether it's directed at someone, for attention, or if it's a welcoming home type of bark. If you're looking for a nice quiet puppy, you should probably search some more because these dogs have voices and they love to be heard.

7. They really love snuggles even when they don't show it

These dogs may be huge and act tough, but they love to cuddle up with you! They don't show affection often but when they do it's full out affection. Snuggles, kisses, and everything in-between. This is one of my favorite things about this breed. They are the perfect size for the perfect snuggles and they love to give them.

8. They're very smart

These dogs are extremely smart and sophisticated. You know when you're looking into their eyes there is someone staring back at you. I may not be able to prove this, but it's easy to see that they can almost understand you when you talk to them. They know when you're upset, or happy and they try to react to however you're feeling. Basic commands are nothing compared to the things these dogs can learn and the tasks they can complete if trained properly. These dogs are no joke, they are smart and they do not let humans take advantage of them by any means.

9. If you share your bed, it's their bed from then on

I, of course, being a huge dog lover offered my bed to my dog. Didn't realize he was going to claim it instantly. I haven't slept alone for the last seven years. To me, it's worth it but some people would prefer to have their whole bed to themselves. If you're one of those people I wouldn't let the dog up on the bed once, because from then on they are going to give you those puppy eyes and before you know it they'll be up there every single night. They'll even claim a spot where they go every night.

10. They are the best friend anyone could ask for

These dogs are the best friend anyone could ask for. Don't get me wrong, all dogs can have this trait but not all dogs are quite as loyal as a shepherd can be. No matter what kind of day you're having they will be there for you through it all. They stand by your side and even in a cute way stand up for you when you're feeling beaten down by the world around you. They will never neglect you or reject your love, they like us humans like to be treated the way they would treat themselves.

So now that you've learned the basics of becoming a german shepherd owner I hope I have led you to make the right choice in your dog adopting process. These dogs have been the best thing that's ever happened to me and I will always recommend them to others. They are everything on this list and more. They are more than just dogs, they have their own personalities, their own traits and characteristics they are their own "person". They will stand by your side, protect you in times of need, care for you, and even listen to you about your day every day if you talk to them. They are always excited to see you no matter it is four days or four minutes. I hope you make the right choice for what type of dog you're looking for and if you do, purchase a german shepherd. You will not be disappointed. In fact, it may just change your life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
