Think Pink This October

Each year, during the month of October, we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a campaign that is designed to increase awareness of breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, next to skin cancer. Each year, more than 2,300 men and 230,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer, and more than 40,000 women die from this disease. If breast cancer is detected and treated early enough, the five year survival rate is 98 percent. Breast cancer can be detected early when performing a self breast exam, having a qualified nurse or doctor perform a clinical breast exam, or having a mammogram regularly.

Breast cancer is something that has affected most, if not all, of us. We have all had some experience with breast cancer, which is why this month is a time to support the men and women who have fought or are currently fighting. There are many great ways this October to help support the fight, like:

American Cancer Society “Making Strides” Walks

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks are breast cancer charity events where people come together to support those affected by breast cancer. These walks raise awareness about the steps that will help to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer. The money raised through these events goes toward the American Cancer Society to fund breast cancer research, information, support, and mammograms for women who need them. The following are dates you can get involved and participate in an event in New England this October:

October 4: Making Strides of Boston

October 18: Making Strides of Providence

October 18: Making Strides of Concord

October 18: Making Strides of Hartford

October 18: Making Strides of Greater Portland

Haymakers for Hope

Haymakers for Hope is a charity organization that holds boxing tournaments to raise money for cancer research. Their mission “is to KO cancer the only way we know how; by literally fighting for a cure.” Each event is organized by amateur boxing participants, local boxing gyms, and volunteers in the hopes of raising money for researchers to gain the resources they need to find a cure to cancer. This October, participate in the Belles of the Brawl in Boston, MA. The event takes place on Oct. 7 at the House of Blues.

A Crucial Catch

A Crucial Catch is a partnership between the NFL and the American Cancer Society to support the fight for breast cancer. The campaign focuses on the importance of regular breast cancer screening. The Crucial Catch events take place throughout October. The will also contribute a minimum of $250,000 in an effort to further Komen’s mission to save lives and end breast cancer. The bracelet is $18 and can be purchased in a small, medium, large, or extra large.

These are just a few fun and exciting ways you can go out and help fight for an important cause. Just one person's effort can help many people fighting this awful disease across the globe. There are many foundations that would appreciate any kind of donation or volunteer support. Simply wearing pink and getting a breast screening will help raise awareness about this cause.

This October, do all you can to Think Pink!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
