College dorms seem nice and all; but what's it really like living in one? A college dorm at first tends to bring everyone together because, well it's new to everyone. After a while though, the 'hype' dies down and your only left with maybe one or two friends to hangout with.
So, the question is, is the college dorm life really worth it? That decision is up to you to decide, but in the mean time, t here are a few things you should probably think about.
One big thing about living in a dorm is the expense; the cost to live on campus sometimes can be more burdensome than you may think.
For my college and many others, the cost to live on campus starts out around $11,000 a year; crazy right ?
But let's say you wanted a room all to yourself, that would cost you about $14,000 a year; that's around $28,000 for your associates degree and $56,000 for your bachelors degree. Living in a dorm is no easy task; but you also have to factor in laundry, at least for mine there is a laundry card that only allows you to add on a minimum of $15. Is that worth it for you?
When it comes to living in dorms or an apartment, there is always a toss up; on one hand the dorms is easy to live in and for the most part you don't have to do much to maintain it.
On the other hand, an apartment actually is cheaper to live in; rent for an apartment with roommates is probably around $1700 a month, that's only $20,400 a year; with two or more roommates your own payment can drop to $600-$850 a month.
Essentially the apartment is much cheaper than living in the dorms, but the dorms provide that full college experience and allow you to be around people your age; possibly sparking an amazing new friendship here and there.
In a dormitory you are sharing your room with another person, the space is divided and there's no walls dividing you from your roommate. While in an apartment you have your own room and own space to do what you want.
Personally, I would much prefer an apartment with some of my close friends than a dormitory; but I do not regret living in the dormitory one bit, even to this day.
