In less than three months, I will be studying at the University of Glasgow and I cannot wait! I can't wait to be taking classes in the history of Scottish castles and on, my favorite topic, the plague. But I still have a bit of time before I'm an ocean away. But while I'm there, there are a few things I want to remember…

While studying abroad, I want to remember that while I am there to learn it is also a time to travel. Yes, the main point of studying abroad is to go to class and learn from a new university and see what they have to offer. But while in a different country, it's important to seize the time there and see what it has to offer. I am making lists of places in Scotland I can't wait to see. I am also looking at places to visit outside Scotland. You know, after my homework.

While studying abroad I want to remember to spend my money wisely. I would like to think I am pretty good at saving money, but I am likely a little biased. I hope to go on a lot of adventures and do many fun things while in Scotland but I would also like not to spend all my money while doing it.

While studying abroad I want to remember that being homesick is normal. I know I will miss home, my friends, and family but I also know that that's normal. Being alone won't always be easy but my family is always one (expensive) call or text away. With classes, homework, and adventures, I think I will be able to keep myself busy and entertained.

While studying abroad I want to remember to stay safe. Whether it be walking in a group or not leaving a drink unattended, there are numerous ways to stay safe while abroad. My university provided an online training session on this topic that was helpful. It mentioned downloading an app called AlertTraveler that is supposed to alert the user if they are near an affected area, of say a crime or an emergency, and has an emergency help button. While sort of glum to discuss, it is a necessary topic because it's essential that everyone be safe.

While I am looking forward to taking off, there is still a bit left to do. Thankfully in that time, I can try to remember all the ways to make my trip even better.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
