20 Things You'll Know if You've Ever Lived Near the Canadian Border

It's hard not to pick up Canadian habits when you live so close. Sure you don't get the free health care and you still have to carry around pennies, but you get the Tim's and poutine and that's still pretty great, eh?

1.Toque's

See those things on the men’s heads? Those are toques. Because nobody has time to say “winter hat."

2. Poutine: You know it, you love it and you can’t live without it.

Also, you probably get slightly offended when people don’t know what it is.

3. Vinegar and fries

Canadians and their french fries… Chances are you love fries with vinegar too. There’s usually vinegar next to the ketchup when you’re at a place that serves fries, and if there’s none in sight you might get a little upset.

4. “Eh” probably slips into your vocabulary

Or if you’re like me it happens ALL OF THE TIME and people not from ‘The Great Up North’ get really confused and laugh at you.

5. Hockey is everywhere.

Hockey, hockey, hockey. It’s everywhere and in every season. If you’re not obsessed, you know a lot of people that are.

6. Tim Hortons

Timmy Hoes is also everywhere.

7. Crossing the border is something you’ve done more times than you can count.

Trying to come back home is almost always harder than going over.

8. You relate much more to the Canadian drivers than Southern Americans.

Yup, that’s about right.

9. It’s a good excuse for 2 Thanksgivings right?!

If you don’t celebrate both, well, I’m sorry, that really sucks.

10. Your change is probably mixed.

Trying to grab the exact change quickly? Good luck with that.

11. People think all Canadians are friendly, LOL.

Or Black Friday shopping, they're in the states and they refuse to miss out on that low tax deal.

12. More than once you've probably wished you knew French Canadian.

They're either talking about you or their next drink.

13. You've probably cursed at Canadian drivers more than once.

Did a Canadian park that?

14. Canada Day is actually, "All Canadian's go to the USA Day."

But why???

15. "You can't drink (legally) until you're 21!" Uh, no.

19 in Ontario, 18 in Quebec.

16. Molson and Labatt Blue are on the drink menu in your town.

Beer is important.

17. Aunt Jemima's is not Maple Syrup.

That garbage will not be in your fridge. Because maple syrup is also important.

18. You've sat through the Canadian National Anthem enough times to know 50 percent or more of the lyrics.

Maybe you even sing along.

19. You might even have Canadian ancestors.

With those Canadian ancestors comes the Canadian genes.

20. Even if you're not of Canadian descent, you've probably been accused of being Canadian.

Sorry for the accent.

We've picked up some unique habits from our "friendly" neighbors, we've seen a side of them that the rest of the world will never understand and we share similar weather conditions. We could basically be considered Canadian and we wouldn't have wanted to live anywhere else.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
