What You Should Know About English Majors
Engrish Funny

The minute you put English majors in a room and ask for their opinions, be warned -- sides will be drawn! Whether it's interpreting what Chaucer meant in The Wife of Bath, the Oxford Comma, or the meaning of a poem, sides will be drawn.

Here are some things you should know about English Majors:

We Make Mistakes, too.

We make mistakes, too. Please remember that we are people. I personally tend to catch more of other people's mistakes than my own. I like to think the paper I just handed in -- despite the coffee stains, is grammatically correct. There's definitely going to be a few mistakes that I haven't caught before I send this article to my editor(s) for approval. That is why I'm glad to have Kyra and Jess. They proofread my work and it definitely helps to have another set of eyes.

We cringe at grammatical errors on Facebook posts, images, and more.

Yes, we all know that texting is an informal way of writing. Yes, we know that autocorrect hates us. So, we'll give you a little leeway there, but don't worry, we're still secretly noticing your grammar mistakes. We're still secretly cringing at your texting vernacular. Oh, and we shed tears when we catch our own mistakes but we've already pressed send.

We may or may not edit your essays.

If you're like my brother, Travis (who loves to text me at midnight to alert me of an incoming email asking me to edit his paper that's due at 8am the next day), just know that your paper may or may not be edited. Editing your paper is not the only thing that we need to do. We have our own assigned reading and annotations to complete by 8am as well. We have our own essays to write, editing yours comes last on our list of things.

I'm happy to edit your paper, though. Just let me know, and give me notice.

We get annoyed when you say English is an "easy major."

English is just like any other major. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication -- we also have our days and nights where we are working through massive piles of assignments, not just reading books. Just like a Bio-Chem major is expected to know all of their formulas by heart, we are expected to know all of the rules of grammar. That's just a small portion of our major, though. Majoring in English isn't a cake-walk, and by no means "easy." We have to work just as hard as everyone else.

Without English Majors, there wouldn't be anyone to teach people how to write a proper paper, or even edit all of the textbooks and other reading materials needed for other majors. "Easy" is subjective. What may seem easy to you, might be a challenge for someone else. Just because you can speak, read, and write in English doesn't mean it is an easy area of study. There's much more to being an English Major than you could ever imagine.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
