Things You Learn While In Your 20s

Let's start adulting!

Things You Learn While In Your 20s

Ever thought of the number of things that you learned while being a kid? Or the amount of times your parents told you to not do something and yet again, you did them? Or better yet, the number of things you learned while growing up?

As we grow older and as we begin to comprehend the seriousness of what it means to be “adulting,” we learn things that we weren't taught by our parents or had an idea that we would be learning in the first place and it is while in the process, that it is a nature to find ourselves winning as well as losing.

Personally, some things that we lose along the way are way to painful to see it fade away, but it’s the things that our parents taught us, the lessons learned along the way, that give us the strength and maturity to understand that some things are better to be without.

Here is a list of some of the things that you will be learning while "adulting…"

1. The list of people you consider friends.

Throw away all you BFF’s bracelet because once you start living, you'll realize that a friend is the one that shares a glass of wine over a conversation on your latest life events. Growing up you used to call everyone who you would share a memory with “my friend,” but growing up will have you learning the real meaning of friendship.

2. You learn how to prioritize things accordingly

Things such as: doing your hair or nails or better yet going shopping become a second choice over paying your bills or using that money on groceries. I mean, pizza maybe?

3. You realize what problems really are

Finally! This is the time in your life where not finding your favorite outfit is no longer a serious problem.. It is while in your late 20s that you'll understand the real definition of what it's refer to when people use the term “problem.”

4. You rediscover yourself

This is to me the most important one because whether it means to go out to a date by yourself to a fancy place or whether you decide to drink a glass.. OR TWO, of wine while you binge watch your favorite show on Netflix, it will be the lonely times that you will find appreciating most.

5. You value things better than what you used to

Better late than never they said-- and I couldn't agree more!

It is the maturity of learning the value of everyone and everything around you that will lead you to give importance to the things you never thought mattered before. Whether it's someone special or just a special place this is the stage of your 20’s in which you'll grow the most.

Of course the list is short but as you grow older and as you rediscover yourself, the list will improve. The experience of growing is never the same for everyone but it is an enjoyable phase for pretty much just anyone!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
