7 Things You Know When You're A Babysitter

Being a babysitter is one of those things that make you stay in your childhood a little bit longer than expected. You learn that if you’re a child, things will be way more fun. Here are some things that you know all too well if you’re a babysitter.

1. You reminisce on your childhood.

The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and Finding Nemo are the movies that all little kids love and you grew up on. You now get to watch them without being judged or feeling like a child. You always get to watch these weird movies and shows that they now have out these days.

2. You never starve.

Food at the babysitter's house is way more fun than at your own house. Pizza rolls, 'Uncrustables,' gummies, cookies, and who knows that else they have in that pantry. It’s like you hit a gold mine or something. You always know never to eat before you babysit because you'll be well fed later on.

3. You learn your crafty side.

No kids want to just sit and watch tv the whole entire time you're babysitting them. Pinterest becomes your best friend with finding fun arts and crafts. It may be something as easy as painting a plate and turning it into an elephant or it might get even more complex and you play Twister with colored shaving cream. You never knew you had a creative side until you started babysitting.

4. You utilize nap time.

Nap time is one of those things that make the whole day seem worth it. No, you don’t sit and watch your favorite show because they kids have hogged the TV, you take a nap as well. These kids have probably been up since 7am and you’re not even used to waking up that early. So, you love love nap time. Everyone benefits.

5. You’re not broke.

Parents pay crazy amounts for watching their kids. Getting paid $10-$15 an hour seems like heaven when you’re only making crafts and watching TV. You don’t get taxes taken out either. You most of the time have a guaranteed job, people will always want you to watch their children. So... the more the merrier.

6. It’s the best birth control.

Sometimes you wonder where these kids come from. They are sweet little angels but then when the parents leave they are the devil reincarnated. You realize how you are NOT going to raise your kid. You also realize that you want to continue to babysit other people’s kids and not have your own.

7. You learn to be a parent person.

Parents love teenagers who love to watch their children. But there always is that certain kind of person they like. You learn what that is and you generate to that person. You learn to change your personalities to fit the parents needs.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
