“Why do you like this stuff—you can’t even understand what they’re saying.”
Well, we may not understand every single word that they’re singing, but the music is still good! Plus, one of the best ways to learn a language is to listen to that language’s music.
“That’s in Chinese, right?”
This one kind of baffles me, I mean it’s called Kpop for a reason. It’s mostly in Korean. However there are a vast array of languages in Kpop, so there are groups who sing in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Through listening to K-pop, I can recognize for the most part the difference between these main three languages. Chinese actually sounds the most different.
“They all look alike.”
Not really. They only look really similar to those who aren’t used to seeing those of a different culture regularly. Americans all look very similar to foreigners. Once you’re around a certain culture, or what a certain culture’s entertainment for a while, the subtle differences that make each person unique are easier to spot.
"It sucks that they can't speak in English."
This isn't true, actually. There are a ton of Korean Idols who can speak in English. Many come from all around the world to train to be in these groups, meaning that many are fluent not in just Korean, but English as well as other languages.
